campbell's soup, general mills, conagra, goes on and on, kraft, hershey.have a lot of leadership groups there the month of august. the big thing, two issues. a valuation problem and a yield problem. we talked about this valuation problem. we started august near 20 times forward estimates on the s&p 500. historically that is very difficult to sustain for long periods of time. it's come down right now. it's closer to 19. there's the number for today, 18.8. these are the forward four quarters for the s&p. historic average is 17. it's still higher but it's coming down. that's a little bit of good news. the real problem is the yield issue because the stock market is getting very serious competition from the bond market. so, in fourth -- the beginning of -- end of july, 3.95 on the ten-year. 4.3%. what this means is the equity risk premium, what you're being compensated for to own stocks versus risk-free treasuries is below. it's below 1%. that is terrible. it usually is anywhere 2%, 3%, 4% typically. stocks are not very compelling against bonds right now. so, g

what we call low volatility names these are typically consumer staple names like general mills, hershey'sanies like united health. you can see the market sort of bifurcated along those lines this fitch thing plays into the market's vulnerability right now, which is very, very high prices high multiples we've talked repeatedly about the current multiple being close to 20 times forward earnings that is very high, historically. typical historical levels around 17 a lot of people say, just take out those magnificent 7 stocks those stocks that are out there. apple, amazon, alphabet, amazon, microsoft, and you get a lower multiple go down to 17 or so, that's more historic if you take out technology completely, you're in the high normal range at 17.8 the problem is, you can't take these things out if you look at separate sectors, it's very clear, technology is trading at multiples 28 times. these are crazy numbers, way above historic averages, consumer discretionary is. you look further down, it looks a little cheaper consumer staples at 19 and health care at 17. but they're not bargains that's
