and retired general mark hertling. thank you both for being here.ant you to listen to remarks made by one of the president's aides on this issue. let's listen. >> the military is not a microcosm of civilian society. they're not there to reflect america. they're there to kill people and blow stuff up. we want people who are transgender to live happy lives but we want unit cohesion and combat effectiveness. there are studies from the establishment that state that the transgender community have a 40% suicide attempt rate. that is a tragedy. we need to help those people. we don't need to try and force them into the higher obstacle military environment where they're under the utmost pressure to kill or be killed. and that is why the president is doing this out of the warmth of his consideration for this population. >> general mark hertling, you have talked, i'm sure, in the last couple of days with your colleagues in the military. what are you hearing in that regard? >> as you know, john kelly and i both wrote an op-ed on this piece, claiming how the ban

cnn military analyst mark hertling is with us now. it's impressive. what do you takeaway from that? how much good will that do? >> it is impressive. it will contribute, but, truthfully, not to disavow anyone, but it is normal of that historic increase which had been planned for the military. mr. trump said he had $19 billion this year and that is in fact, a historic budget. he is standing in front of a aircraft carrier that is a technological marvel and it began under the 2005 bush administration and built from 2009 until it was commissioned yesterday under the obama administration. so this is nothing new. mr. trump will probably not see his campaign promises come to fruition even with the increase in the budget and most of that is going for operations and personnel costs and maintenance, not any new ships he promised, i think, 350 new ships and $540,000 soldier army, as well as increase in the air force and the marine corps. the budget he has promised will not give that. it will probably mainta476,000 and eight new navy ships that we

army, lieutenant general mark hertling.al, i rely on you all the time for the right way to look at situations that regard the military. how do you see this? >> chris, there's a couple things to look at. first of all, what happened, how it happened and why it happened. first of all, in a matter of seconds, as soon as that tweet appeared yesterday morning, thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marine were affected. i'm not just talking about getting the news. i'm talking about some who might be deployed, some who might be in hospitals after being injured. some serving in command positions, and they all woke up seeing this surprise and saying, holy smokes, what am i going to do? how is this going to affect me? i'm in service that i love. what is going to occur? they've been serving there for years. secondly is how it happened. it was sent out. the department of defense did not know. they were caught flat-footed. all the service chiefs told the secretary of defense just weeks ago that they wanted a little more time to do s

stephen macklow-smith and joining us this morning is james hertling.cades of experience, watching the game. i would suggest that the dialogue, the debate of washington changed last night, about 7:00 p.m. new york time and this world collusion is becoming evident. what is collusion? >> good morning, tom. and let me say, you probably don't want my life, first of all. as far as collusion goes, it suggests the trump campaign officials knowingly working with officials of representatives of a foreign government in order to defeat hillary clinton. and i'm not a campaign lawyer or finance expert, but that kind of linkage with a foreign government in an election i don't think is appropriate. tom: an important question for our global audiences can government run normally with these kind of stories. in "the new york times" today we have the bombshell with collusion with donald trump junior and just below that we have an article about mr. been i and jared kushner -- about mr. bannon and jared kushner. news have this kind of flow,c an normal government happen? >> g
