what is your thought on how 5.9 giga hertz should be used? >> i commend commissioner riley on this issue and think it highlights one of the most promising areas of innovation. the five giga hertz broadband is taylor made for the next generation of wi-fi. the technical standard is in place to use it. there are all sorts of applications yearning to use it. that particular part of the band hit a snag meaning we need to coordinate with counterparts in the auto motive industry to make sure whatever unlicensed uses that proliferate don't interfere. a lot of solutions are on the table but we need to make a commitment to resolve this in the near future. there are people of good faith on both sides of the issue. >> a similar issue is the unlicensed issue which has been percolating on the back burner. and in november, at&t published a blog post that suggested maybe the fcc could use authority under section 333 to essentially say that unlicensed and license spectrum should all live under the same non-interference expectations. what is your take on that?

our idea is you put the dsrc, 30 end in hertz, exclusively. would not be shared. they would have the spectrum for dsrc to itself. and that should be ample spectrum for dsrc because dsrc, as michael indicated, is using a ten-megahertz channel. if you looked at michael's chart, on the left lower portion of the bund, it abutts the uni-3 portion of the band. one of the most heavily used bands for wi-fi. the safety channel should be put as far away from the core wi-fi channel so that we are protecting against interference. in the lower 45 megahertz, we would advocate that that be shared. we have ideas about the best way. one is, again, getting nerdy here, dsrc uses a ten-megahertz channel. wi-fi uses a 20-megahertz channel. dsrc would use 20 megahertz, then it would match up with wi-fi. and i think the detect and avoid would be much easier. in a nutshell, thank you all for coming. thank you to the commissioners who spoke on their interest in the issue. i'm heartened to hear about the letter to the hill. and we look forward to working with everyone to reach a compromise

rosenworcel to talk about efforts to advance additional uses of what's referred to as the 5.9 gilg hertz band. i'd like to comment briefly on new america's latest report and some related activity that took place at the world radio communication conference, or wrcc 15. i promise not to talk to long. it's fair to say, though, that michael and his organization and i haven't always agreed on every communication issue during my time at the commission. we certainly have had fundamental disagreements on particular policy matters. never let it be said, however, our views always crash. in fact, when people of vastly different believes can come together on important policy matters, it should help demonstrate the depth of overall support so i'm pleased to be here today to discuss our mutual perspective on the benefits of unlicensed spectrum in the upper 5 gigahertz band. as michael knows well and just referenced, many i involvement with unlicensed spectrum originated far before my commissioner days. back then, early debates over television white spaces then led by senator john sununu and a couple o
