now hezbollah trying to dial back tensions. our senior international correspondent is following the latest developments from beirut in lebanon. a what is hezbollah saying how is that message being transmitted, what's the latest? >> well, it was described as a message of restraint. israeli defense minister called it as the usual nonofficial channels. there is a lot of diplomatic back chat in those nonofficial ways particularly crucial at times like this. speaking to a lot of people here, they're worriers. there's always that 2006 israel and lebanon war hanging over this. this really has dialed back the tension, this attempt at reaching out by hezbollah. here people are slowly starting to exhale and hoping that israel will be receptive. >> as you know they insist they don't want the situation to escalate either. you're on the ground right near the border with lebanon. >> well, wolf we were literally at the fence with the border between israel and lebanon. it's quiet. the clashes have stopped. and there's no fighting. but everyone

this area has always been a contentious one for israel and hezbollah. hezbollah has carried out attacks there before, but certainly none any as bold as this for years. nicole johnston, southern lebanon. >> two correspondents to talk to about this developing story. james bays, we'll come to in a moment. but we'll go to jerusalem. any direction that we've had about where this could go further? >> well, there is a lot of analysis out there about how it could pan out in the next few hours. however, let me just give you details that we got in the last hour. an israeli army source has confirmed that the spanish u.n. peace keeper that was killed was killed from a mortar shell that was fired from israel. this source said that the army was an in immediate contact with the united nations that they regret this incident and will investigate it. as well as there were no intentions to harm the u.n. forces that are based there. further information we received from the army as well is that today a total of six missiles were fired from lebanon by hezbollah into israel.

the big question is ho will hezbollah's response be. the leader of the group a few days ago said that they had the ability to strike israel anytime, anywhere. now the question is when will they do that, and what time of retaliatory action will it be. could it be strong enough to lead to a war. most we've spoken to here don't believe that it will be that strong. hezbollah is deeply mired in the conflict in syria at the moment. the last thing we expect them to do is fight another war, one in syria and one in israel. we would expect a more measured response from them. we don't know when that will be. we spoke to one member of parliament from hezbollah. he basically said, you know, watch, wait and see. >> it is ironic that one of those being buried today his father was killed a few years ago in another israeli air strike. >> that's right. that's why this funeral is so significant. his father was a senior commander inside hezbollah and he was killed in syria in 2008, assassinated israel never claimed responsibility, but hezbollah has always
