hickenlooper: i'm just saying. and you should look at medicare advantage if you really want to see -- medicare isn't the best way to control costs. medicare advantage is dramatically cheaper and it allows you to do things like tele-medicine. our health care system is a business. and businesses reward where they get paid. if you keep someone from getting diabetes, you don't get paid for that. you get paid where there is a crisis, like going to the hospital. medicare advantage has all kinds of ways where you can do tele-medicine. it is a rate were doctors decompensated on keeping people well. last, quick question. this is the last question. i know, i know, i know. you cannot deny the youth to ask a question. [laughter] -- is the best way for, balancing a social and environmental problem. we have done a lot to address economical problems, and you talked about -- what would be your solution to the biggest problems, which are climate change, jail reform and -- reform? hickenlooper i think you start at your first step. part of human nature is we all feel safer when we are with our own family, our own tribe, our own neighborhood, our own community. however you define that, we feel safer there. but something special happens when you're able to collaborate with people who are somewhat different from us or from the town over. we were talking about this this afternoon, when people first settled in the west, each ranch, each farm was independent. but they had to be able to work with their neighbors for safety and security, and when they got their crops, they had to figure out how to get them to market. if pure capital denied them fair value for their crops, they would come together and collaborate to get a common good. part of what i'm trying to talk about hopefully over the next two years, or i guess i should say 19.5 months, part of that is this notion that we are stronger together when we are united. it sounds like a cliche when you talk about it. there is no magic to it. the truth is not like a grail

what does hickenlooper mean? >> well, we were always told as kids that hickenlooper was dutch for hedge hopper. people would jump over the hedge to deliver the mail. but we as children were asked, why isn't it more common? so as it turned out, later in life my uncle told me that the truth was that hedge hoppers really were game poachers, and they would jump over the king's hedge and kill the king's deer. that's why i guess it's a common name in some of the prison colonies like australia. >> you're saying hedge hopper, not head chopper? >> no. that's a political interpretation. >> okay. just wanted to make sure we were hearing it right. let's get straight to the audience. our first question comes from lauren patrick. she works in marketing with technology startups right here in atlanta. >> hey, y'all. all right. as a geologist for the oil industry who was laid off, then started a brewery, and eventually became mayor of denver, governor of colorado, and now seeking the highest office in the land, you've shown how a

where does governor hickenlooper fit into this race?, first, you can see we're already here. we have a packed house ready for tonight. to answer your question, he fits in a really interesting place because he's one of two governors who are running in the democratic field. and he was kind of an accidental politician, accidental businessman, to be sure, because he was a geologist. he got laid off, anderson, and he used his severance to start beer companies and that's how sort of he got started and then he was mayor of denver and then, of course, he was a two-term governor of colorado until he was term limited out. so he has a really different perspective than a lot of the members of congress who are running. lots of house members, mostly senators. different world view. >> and our poll, though, was released yesterday about the 2020 candidates. ma ki what kind of support does he have at this point according to that? >> not much. he doesn't have very big name i.d. >> which at this stage -- >> he's in good company, exactly, he's in good compa

what do hickenlooper, inslee and merkley, to name three, bring to this race?t underserved market do they fill? >> first of all, brian, they come from states that have not had presidential contenders recently. washington state, oregon and colorado. i think more importantly they're going to be advocates for particular issues. in the case of inslee as you saw in his interview a couple hours ago on this network with rachel maddow, he cares hugely about climate change. and wants to make that the sole top issue on his agenda and will really try to use that spot on the debate stage probably to force that issue into the conversation. you know, hickenlooper's rung on his economic record and other aspects of his governorship in colorado. and merkley's running as a very progressive candidate. he's been one of the most progressive candidates in the senate. back in 2016 he was the only u.s. senator to endorse bernie sanders in the democratic primary. what it tells us is that the democratic party sees a huge opportunity here to win back the white house and to defeat preside

what do hickenlooper, hensley and merkle, what underserved markets do they fill?more importantly they're going to be advocates for particular issues. in the case of ensly as you saw in his interview a couple of hours ago on this network with rachel maddow he cares hugely on climate change. hickenlooper is running on his economic record and other aspects in colorado. and in the senate. back in 2016 he was the only u.s. senator to endorse bernie sanders in the democratic primary. what it tells us is that the democratic party sees a huge >> laura, let's get closer to that. i have nbc news "wall street journal" polling which may not be great news for bernie sanders and to a lesser extent, joe biden. both of those gentlemen would turn-0 years old during their theoretical first term in office. this is kind of the bottom of the poll. another way to put this is, democrats were asked what two" would you be the least psyched about and they're saying, well, somebody who's over 75 and somebody who is a socialist. so you got bernie sanders, a democratic socialist who would tur

where does john hickenlooper fit? >> we're seeing a little bit of y not me phenomenon. aspirations you're seeing how big the field is getting and seeing that anyone and everyone is jumping in. and you're also seeing president trump and just how embattled he is. just how sort of -- how much trouble he seems to be in. you are probably thinking about the possibility of him maybe not finishing out his term and you're thinking, why not me? why would i not seize this opportunity to get in? obviously, for him, it's clear that he is trying to be sort of take the lane of the moderate candidate, the more centrist candidate. and when you are seeing that the rest of the field is going so far to the left, you might think to yourself, maybe there is space for me in this field. >> who else is in that middle lane? >> i think senator amy klobuchar has tried to occupy that among the senators. we might see folks going forward. folks like former vice president joe biden, maybe congressman seth molton out in massachusetts. a number of folks who try to say while the democratic party may be m
