i currently in 10 lowell high school in san francisco as a senior. i wrote that before us -- taking health class at school, i would not have been able to describe what hiv and aids are. i would not have had the slightest clue that hiv and aids can be transferred through sharing needles. this shows that people can be really clueless about how hiv and aids are contracted in transmitted without proper information. i remember reading "and the band played on" for school. it focuses on communities that were hit hardest by hiv and aids. they began begging the government to fund research and to provide social services for those dying of aids. this a book many realize how serious hiv and aids czar. and relates to those struggling with hiv and aids. health class is at my school made me aware of the potential dangers and the means of preventing transmission. i would like to thank the national aids memorial grove for helping to achieve my dream of attending college. since those are also an immigrant from el salvador, i do not qualify for federal or state aid. thi

we had about 3,000 high schools participate, again in all 50 states. we had on average about 30-50 kids per classroom and all told we reached 1.5 million high school students with our program in between march 23rd and july fourth, getting them educated and registered to vote. we thought that worked really well, let's just do this again som so this year we will make it an every year thing, starting on january third, we will call teachers and support them bringing it into their classrooms. there's a couple of things you can do, i know one secretary that went into a school in columbus and was a guest teacher. secretary bowan did the same thing, in florida. we have plenty of opportunities come in and be the guest teacher with us in these programs. two, just promote it to the schools in your state. on that day, that the 26th amendment was introduced they can get free materials, from buttons and t-shirts and lesson plans and everything that they will need to teach the class. and three, we are doing this in schools all across the country and would love to par

a high school degree have been particularly hard hit over the last few years. a couple of my colleagues in the senate reflected on that and continued to have a far lower labor force rate compared to other educated levels that ranged from 60% to 70%. if we can help people get a degree, they have a better chance of getting a job. and if we can work with them so that they can pass a drug screening then if they get offer a job, they get a chance to get that job. because that's really the heart of the matter here, is getting people back to work. now, i have heard that just today that if extending unemployment is some sort of economic growth model, putting money into the pockets of those who are unemployed they'll spend it. it will help. but i have heard a ratio of $1 to $2. and everybody who spoke it got less and less. so i think we have to agree this recovery stinks. we can do better. we need the safety net in place of unemployment insurance with proper reforms. and the payroll tax reduction properly paid for. i would yield to my friend from new york. >> thank you,

that the high school is open and the kids went back to school. that was done a little bit -- fema wrote a check and brought some people in to help out, but it was the leadership and the dedication of the school superintendent, the city manager, the students, the parents. the community that helped raise some money, but more importantly, the community that got behind folks to help design as the secretary of education who actually said it was a state of the art high school that would put almost any high school in to shame that they designed in 55 days. tells you something about taking years to design. 55 days they designed a state of the art high school. it's about communities coming together. in joplin, so much of it able to bring together the faith-based community. the southern baptist cooking food for 50,000 people that was then delivered by the red cross to a salvation army shelter that was served by men nice and cleaned up by muslims. with no government involvement. that's whole community. that's what it's going to take to recover from these. a
