they stopped by for a hometown parade in highland park. shortly after 10:14, he lost both of his parents. it happened when a 21-year-old gunman with a military style ar 15 rifle began shooting. his father, kevin, used his body as a shield to protect him. kevin and aidan's mother was killed by gunfire. the shooting stopped and he was found wandering along the parade route with his father's blood smeared along his legs. i first heard about this when i called after hearing the news and she talked about the little boy they were still trying to identify. this other c photo is cooper roberts, 8-years-old. he was at the parade with his twin brothers parents and a bullet severed his spinal cord. we pray that he will recover. but for the time being, he's hes battling paralysis from the waist down and he's gone through at least seven surgeries including one to reclose a bullet wound in his esophagus. myle heart is broken for these boys and their families, all the families mourning their loved ones and struggling to recover from this unspeakable act.

shortly after the events that occurred in downtown highland park, our team here at highland park hospitalinvolved in a mass shooting or casualty event. our team very quickly activated one of our internal messaging codes called code yellow, which is for mass casualty and trauma response to mobilize our surgical teams, to bring in other resources and within a very short amount of time started to receive a number of ambulances from the emergency medical system. we received in total about 26 total patients, ten of which were transported by ambulance. during that time in a very short amount of time, we had nearly 20 additional physicians and 20 additional nursing and support staff here in our emergency department as well as in other areas of the hospital to help take care of the patients that were brought in. and all of those individuals came as a result of following our protocols. we also put in an extra safety or security protocol where we locked down the hospital, hence why we're meeting out here in the parking lot as we continue to try to maintain a very safe environment in our hospital fo
