thank you in highland park.ning us now, ashley beasley, a survivor of the highland park shooting and anti gun violence advocate. before this, what did you do? now you trying constructive. after that incident that you and i, you were on the ground running and not knowing where to run. we were watching the video here, covering the story, not knowing what was happening. now you know what happened. what are you doing to try to prevent this from happening going forward? >> i've been working really hard with our lawmakers trying to get support for a federal ban on assault weapons as well as other pieces of gun safety legislation. until we pass these laws, these mass shootings will continue to happen. we know that 77% of mass shooters including our mass shooter, buy their weapons legally and ar 15 style weapons like the one used at our parade, kill six times as many people per each public mass shooting event. so it is critical for us to pass gun safety legislation to cut off the easy access to these weapons, to prevent

some of what we're doing in highland park is really making our voices louder and bigger. it's easy to feel afraid when you see headlines like the ones that just preceded me. we shouldn't have to be brave to go to the movie theater or the grocery store. fear can make you small. i would ask folks listening to think about what can they do. the fear that we have is making us quiet. it's making us less likely to talk about the role that guns are playing in our families and communities. that advances the notion that we're divided on this. we're not divided on this. we need to join together and get loud. if the current composition of congress can't give us the laws we need to ensure our kids can live the lives they deserve, then we need new members of congress. it's that simple. >> it's a shame we hear about a 2-year-old and a 13-year-old both injured in the shooting in philadelphia and we've become numb to it because it's common place and it's not right. liz dunning, thank you so much for being with us. >>> president biden will welcome military families to the white house today

memories of last year when we saw similar in highland park. i know you're there covering one shooting, but i want to ask you about what we know about the shooting in philadelphia because the circumstances there different. it appears that shooting was highly planned. >> reporter: yeah, that is very different information we're getting for that particular shooting. this according to philadelphia police was a shooting that spanned several blocks in a neighborhood there in the city. and the suspect is a 40-year-old man who was -- carried out the attack with an ar-style assault rifle. he was wearing a bulletproof vest according to police, as well as having several magazine rounds on him. was also carrying a police radio. there were five victims in all ranging in age from 15 to 59. there was also a 13-year-old that was wounded in the attack, as well. so some really troubling details emerging from that particular attack there in philadelphia. as you mentioned, it definitely has an aura that it was much more planned, coordinated, kind of attack there.
