[ gunshots ] >> at least six people were shot dead and more than two dozen others were injured. their ages ranging from just 8 to 85. the suspect in the mass shooting has been identified as robert crimo iii. he was arrested after an intense manhunt. the police chief in the chicago suburb explained how they finally tracked him down. >> the subject that we were looking for, the person of interest, robert crimo iii, was spotted by a north chicago unit at buckley and 41, his vehicle, the vehicle that we were looking for. he initiated, attempted to initiate a traffic stop on that subject. that subject did flee. a brief pursuit went on. ultimately, they were able to get the subject stopped at wesley and 41 in lake forest. the suspect was taken into custody without incident. >> well, cnn spoke with a woman who says she was near the center of the shooting are

. >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news, highland park, illinois. >>> we're getting a lot more information on this investigation. joining me now is kathy parks. she's an nbc news correspondent. she is in highland park, illinois, right now. kathy, thank you so much for your time today. we've learned a lot more details about this investigation. can you tell us about that and what we've learned about the shooter and his planning of this attack, the suspected shooter? >> reporter: yeah, janelle, good to be with you. they have been holding press conferences throughout the day. the last one we got a little bit more information about the background on the gunman. they told us that there were two incidents back in 2019 that were essentially red flags. they were contacted due to a mental health call and also family members actually contacted authorities because there was a potential for violence and then officials said that he purchased five firearms shortly after that call in september 2019. as far as the investigation goes, as we know that the suspect actually planned the attack for several weeks
