"today in the bay's" nanette miranda joins us live at oakland highland hospital. the firefighter getting a lot of support. >> reporter: that's right. 55-year-old mitchell ow had a steady stream of visitors here at highland hospital from firefighters and family's at his side as he's being treated in the intensive care unit. at the helm of an aircraft rescue firefighting rig where he lost control of the truck and tipped it. it happened before noon during a red alert training exercise testing emergency response times to airports incidents. ow was not ejected. the truck was carrying 3,000 gallons of water and 2400 gallons of foam. best possible care was nearby bier for ow's injuries. he recently transferred to the airport unit to try something different and joined in the elite airport firefighting team. in his three decade career, ow known for being talented, athletic, kind, and very polite. characteristics co-workers say you want in a firefighter. >> heavy rescue, a type of person that you want on your crew. he's the type of person in you call 911 you want him in you

he is on a long road to recovery, but he's doing it with friends, family and co-workers here at highland hospital here in oakland. mitchell ow is still in the intensive care unit but now able to wreath on his own. we saw a steady stream of firefighters and friends coming to highland hospital to visit the 28-year veteran of the oakland fire department. it was yesterday al was driving a rescue fire fighting rig during a training exercise when the rig flipped. he was rushed here in critical condition. colleagues say it is a huge relief to know he's able to breathe on his own, and he is doing better. >> when i saw him yesterday, you know, he was intubated. now he's taken off the breathing tube. that's always a good sign. he's resting. and what the most important thing is now, just for him to recover, and have all the swelling and everything go down. >> reporter: while he is resting, investigators now working to figure out why the rig flipped. that training apparently goes on every month. and coming up tonight at 6:00, we are talking to them about how long they expect this investigation to ta
