. >> reporter: freemont officer todd young is in serious but stable condition tonight here at highland hospital, but as you said today we learned new details from his wife about what happened just after he was rushed here. freemont police tell us that young was hit by two bullets. doctors say his injuries were so severe they transfused six times the normal amount of blood found in a human body. freemont police say oakland police saved his life by rushing him to highland hospital in the back of a squad car. nicole young, todd young's wife today emotionally learned about how she learned about her husband's shooting. >> i was told that he wouldn't let them put him to sleep until he called his wife. he called me and said he was in highland hospital and that he was okay, he just got hit in the leg. so i came up here. >> reporter: young has been under sedation for a week now in order to help him recover from his wounds. trauma doctors say it'll be several days before he can communicate with visitors. nicole young describes for us what she hopes to tell him when he wakes up. >> that i love hi

on 31st street near the highland hospital entrance. the vick, a 22-year-old man was critically wounded. one suspect has already been arrested but police are still out there looking for a second gunman. ktvu news has been told that this shooting is connected to an earlier shooting at 89th avenue and mcauthor boulevard. >> a federal judge blocked the execution scheduled at san quintin this week. it was set to take place tomorrow night at san quintin's new death chamber but last night the judge cancelled the execution saying more time is needed to determine if california's new lethal injection procedures amount to cruel and unusual pinnish. the judge's decision came 24 hours after the 9th circuit court of appeals stepped into the case. >> what the 9th circuit was clearly concerned about was whether there is enough time to conduct a meaningful review in that short amount of time. >> this legal battle is far from over. later today the governor's office will ask a federal appeals court to lift the stay and allow the execution to take place.

the church of the highland. you can see from his vantage point. he took his camera and started taking pictures just minutes after the explosion happened. we know it's daylight because it's daylight, but we know it's early on because, we've heard it before and true in this case, it's a fire ball. people said, that looks like more than a house fire, something major is going on there. over time this grew and spread out. and later when the gas line was capped, the news spread. but people told us they felt their houses shake, so that is what it looked like literally minutes after it happened. i have another piece of video tape i'd like to share with you. just listen to what we hear. we heard just a second ago, four or five explosions, pop, pop, pop. we were able to hear those from as far away from where the videographer was taping. people kept saying they were hearing explosioning. we kept hearing the explosions. once the lines were capped, people said we don't hear the pops anymore. we hear the helicopters and emergency crews. it's a completely differ
