, author of the highf hightower low down. thank you for joining me. appreciate it. >> thank you. >>> joining me now is matthew iglesias, a fellow at the center for american progress. how are you doing. >> good. good to be here. >> so you did your proper home work this weekend and read rick perry's book "fed up." you summarize his deal on social security like this, according to perry, social security is by far the best example of a program violently tossing aside any principles. how do you think that will play on the stump? >> i think it will be tough. if you read this book, it's much less boring than a conventional campaign book but radical. it paints the picture of a candidate that would be the most conservative dins since barry goldwater and someone who thinks the majority of the federal government's activities are unconstitutional that means social security, medicare, all regulation of banks. it means all kind of environmental regulations and federal involvement in education. it's a bracing far right states rights track. i

the creativity of authors, the enthusiastic populism of general hightower, the restrictive journalism of lopez. when you read it biggio funny talking about -- when you leap -- when you read giovanni talking about love, you want to fight to save a species that make love and a world that is hospitable to the portrait of love. we fight back by celebrate what is best in our lives and our culture. it is not just politics or economics, although there are prophetic voice is in there about politics and economics. this book is as relevant today as when we did these interviews, but we also have to celebrate -- henry david thoreau, the great author of the 19th century, said it, "to affirm the quality of the day is the highest of the arts." and you have to include that kind of affirmation in your journalism or you wind of edging toward cynicism, moving towards -- skepticism is healthy, cynicism is poisonous. it is the artists and musicians, but painters, the writers, poets who provide the joy and insight in life, and you have to talk to them. even if you are doing a book about politics. tavis: i

joining me now is jim hightower, former agricultural commissioner of texas, and erica greider, for many this is their introduction, rick perry, of course, you ran against perry in his first successful statewide race, he beat you, how did he beat you and what did you learn from it? >> actually, chris, it wasn't he who beat me, it was carl rove. in order to run against me, the chemical lobby and other special interests were offended in our state that i had promulgated some pesticide regulations to help family farmers and consumers to help farm workers, so they were out to get me. and carl rove basically sent perry out to west texas to roam around from one farmer meeting to the next. he put $3 million dollars into one of his patented negative campaigns to come after me, but the significant thing about perry is that he has become a formidable campaigner, but not anything really when you probe it all that strong. for example, he won reelection last year as governor of texas, and he's now bragging about that across the country saying see, i win sweeping victories, but what he doesn't tell you

hightower, he hasn't impressed you. rick perry talking about president obama just yesterday in iowa. let's listen to the road show. >> look, i think the greatest threat to our country right now is this president who's trying to spend our way out of this disaster. >> and here he is at the same event. he had this to say about fed chairman ben bernanke who i think has been saving this country's bacon. let's listen. >> if this guy prints more money between now and the election, i don't know what y'all will do to him in iowa, but we -- we would treat him pretty ugly down in texas. i mean, printing more money to play politics at this particular time in american history is almost treacherous -- or treasonous in my opinion. >> does this guy know any history, treating somebody ugly? that's what they did to adlai stevenson in '63. remember that? appointed by george w. bush, the fed chairman. this afternoon perry said he stood by what he said, of course, but a former aide to president bush tweeted this response to his off-the-cuff

with me now is congressman, democratic congressman lloyd doing et of texas and jim hightower, radio talkw commentator. he was texas agriculture in 1980s, losing that post in 1991 to none other than rick perry. congressman, let me start with you. what do you make of this weird, in my opinion, strange would be a better word, political journey of rick perry? >> well, reverend, from deep in the heart of texas, jim and i want to give you a little texas truth about governor perry. not these tall tales from a governor that thinks he can perform miracles. but has only done more to widen the gap between the very rich and the poor folks and middle class income folks of people who are losing their opportunity to be in the middle class here. rick perry is a fellow that will do anything and say anything in order to get elected. and i've said -- and i believe it, that michele bachmann and some of these people on the right wing of the republican party, they better keep an eye out because rick will leap over them. he's just recently denied that there's any truth to the problems we're facing on global wa
