[applause] [inaudible] since my daddy took me to the show years ago. so let's get started, beginning with our leader. ralph nader, of course, is the author, yes, it's been 50 years now of unsafe at any speed and numerous consumer protection, environmental, worker protection laws in our country that is made it altogether a better place to live. the late great southern humorist said something some years ago that we in the south have always known to be true, that is there's a great big difference between being naked and being naked. being naked means you have no clothes on. being naked means you have no clothes on and you're up to something. well, i believe in the image of ralph nader nakedly own imagination but the naked truth is that ralph is always coming up with something, including this great democracy rally. ralph nader. [applause] it is my pleasure to introduce jim hightower.y of you already know about him but there are something things you may not know about him and one is that he is such a force of nature that only eight --as -- that even the a's that even a texas cyclone could not blow him off the stage. is indefatigable. radio a national commentary program. -- shewritten many looks -- he hasn many books written many books with outlandish titles like "swim against the current, even a dead fish can go with the flow." but what most people don't know about him, outside of texas, is he was elected twice secretary of agriculture in texas where he went all over the state reorienting texas farmers who were beleaguered to giant suppliers and giant buyers of their products, very serious monopolistic hit on both sides to marketing their products directly, to moving towards more organic agriculture, to organizing themselves as a force to reviving the agrarian people and traditions at its best in texas. he was going for his third term where dirty tricks undermined

dallas morning news ran an editorial saying this is just foolish on hightower's parts. if the people wanted farmers markets the free market would have created farmers markets. we brought some staff together, organizers, marketing people, put them at the disposal of local people throughout the state and said, would you like to create a farmers market? they said yes. then they would do it. so we provided resources, we provided information, we provided promotion. we didn't own anything. we didn't run it, but we became the catalyst for ordinary people putting tools in their hands and then they would create it. we had more than 100 farmers markets within two years of the time of the thing being set up. [ applause ] we took on the writing of organic standards. there were no organic standards in texas and no -- and we became the first state agency to certify organic production to do it as a state level. so we brought all those forces together. whole foods, then a little store, it was part of our operation. some of the local farmers, again farm workers, consumers, et cetera, en

david mulnar with hightower advisers. >>> the one country that could change the dynamic in the oil market. >>> low oil prices have taken two more victims. oil and gas producers midstates petroleum and ultra petroleum have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. according to court documents the two companies have nearly $6 billion in debt combined. >>> despite settling lower today, crude prices are up about 20% so far this year. part of the reason for the climb is the assumption that global demand will increase. but as jackie deangelis reports, that demand may not be coming from the places you'd think. >> reporter: crude royal prices continue to be lower for longer due to an ongoing global supply glut. two ways to balance things out, produce less, or consume more. the demand side of the equation has been a little bleak. europe and asia are where analysts look for an uptick. there hasn't been sufficient evidence that either market will move the needle that much. but there is a bright spot. possibly discounted. india. india uses roughly 4 million barrels of crude oil per day, less than h

we don't get specific until you come to the bapis group at hightower, but other than that, we don't look at specific names. >> do you think the fed raises rates next month? >> i think you could see it. short term it's going to matter. there's going to be light volume. there's going to be the summer doldrums if you will. it will affect the markets short term. it's not going to do anyway. >> we were talking during the break with another it helps. >> again, the experts are divided. they think the economy's not good, and when they do raise rates, it's going to crush the markets. historically you're right. look at the beginning of the year. if you look at january 1st saw the percentage where it was, close them, march 1st, nothing would have happened. but we saw a huge volatility. that could happen with the fed raising rates in the short term. >> it's like charlie mung ger said. microeconomics is what we do, mac macro economiconomics is what w up with. >> michael bapis of bapis hightower. we'll take a break that and then our david faber will be covering the report. we'll bring it to you along
