>>> right now on cbs news bay area, hilary wasn't the only natural event to hit southern california over the weekend. an earthquake struck the town of ohi and people got warning, more on that in a few minutes. >>> in the san bernardino mountains a group of first responders nearly ended up in trouble themselves. take a look at this. >> firefighters heard loud rumbling and hiked up the hill to investigate. that station was completely blocked both directions. thankfully, no firefighters were actually hurt. we've been talking for days how rare tropical storms are in california. brian hackney is here with more on the conditions that brought this all together. what exactly caused all this? >> usually in the summer, the reason we don't get storms, we get this huge high out of the pacific. that changed and that set the stage. i'll show you in a second. first let me show you the latest on hi-def doppler, a few scattered showers, remnants of hilary mostly gone, still a chance over the next 24 hours. in terms of what led up to this, first of all, the hot water, literally they're in hot water at the

we were talking about the tropical storm hilary and some remnants. it may be impacting our weather computer. >> that's what happens behind the scenes, technical issues across the board. in the bay area we are seeing clouds swirl their way around as we will see rain relatively shortly. down southeast los angeles got five and a half inches of rain from the storm, about four and a half in palm springs. where max is now, only an inch. in the grand scheme of things you saw the impacts widespread throughout the southwest. here is what we will see today from the same storm, pop up showers in the 3:00 hour in the east bay, isolated heavy storms. be prepared if you see one of the dark clouds, take it slow. if you sigh lightning head indoors as soon as possible. around dinnertime, widespread scattered showers. luckily it starts wringing out the last of the moisture overnight and we are left with partly cloudy skies tomorrow. there was record breaking numbers with rain but we were breaking our own records in the northern areas. yesterday in the bay area we hit

not actually a part of the hilary storm front. that's much further east. but it could be influencing how gray and humid it is in august. light rain fell briefly on parts of napa and sonoma counties in the morning. >> i actually had a few rain drops on my drive in this morning. >> reporter: the director of wine making. he said from the start it looked like the storm would miss the region. but in farming, you never know. >> we look at the weather five times a day. and so it is always a consideration. >> reporter: as it is the trace amount of rain that's falling is no threat to the vineyards with the unusually cool sum or so far. they say the grapes are maturing more slowly about 2 to 3 weeks behind schedule. the different colors in this cabernet cluster will show how the berries are ripening at different rates, but still too hard and immature to face any threat from rain. it is only when they get very close to harvest that they will become vulnerable to mold and mildew from an unexpected storm. >> our typical harvest will start arou

yes, the storm still continues with hilary down south. we are picking up on activity overnight through the central valley, circling around parts of the sacramento valley and out onto the parts of marin county. lightning is being detected close to hollister as you approach interstate 5 there. so all of that activity, thanks to hilary, which will be downgraded later today from a category 1 to a tropical storm, once it does get into san diego, los angeles, really that storm intensifying as the morning hours continue today. we'll talk about all of the impacts and how close those showers will get today into the bay area. kira, back to you. >> all right, see you soon. >>> as you just said, hilary has been downgraded again to a category 1 hurricane, and it's expected to reach tropical storm status, as it makes landfall in southern california there. but the threat from this historic weather event is far from over. millions of californians and people in parts of mexico are being warned to prepare. we have live looks for you, both in san diego on t

this is why hilary came to california. because those two were in just the right place to create a little bit of an alley right here to pull up what happened to be there at the same time, and there just happened to be a decaying hurricane there. that's how it came on shore inland and up into the deserts and why it's so unusual. now, tomorrow, that low has one more trick up its sleeve. it will take what's left of hilary here going into the deserts, there's the big swath of moisture now. as it moves north, you can still see a little bit of a counterclockwise spin out here. sure enough, by tomorrow morning, that pulls some of the left overs from hilary and draws it back to the bay. so luckily for us, by the time it gets here it's just left over showers. a little humidity in the air tomorrow. and yeah, we could get a stray thunderstorm in that scenario. but the atmosphere is so moist right now with a decent amount of rain, there's not a high concern for dry lightning or lightning sparked fires. but a rare isolated thunderstorm

good morni to tropical storm hilary. frances dinglasan is tracking the latest and the potential impacts in the bay area. frances: tropical storm hilary has winds of about 70 miles per hour, around 220 miles south southeast of san diego, california. it is expected to hit our border around 2, 3 :00 this afternoon. it will bring the heaviest rain and winds this afternoon and evening through southern and central california. remnants of hilary will impact the bay area, most likely more tomorrow than today. today, we could see a few isolated showers. tomorrow, we have better chances of showers. the forecast animation, you see a little bit of green east of ukiah and cloverdale. for the most part, increasing clouds and higher humidity. tomorrow morning is when we could see better chance of scattered showers throughout the day. rain totals will be little to none, more rain north and east of the bay area. stephanie: southern california is under a state of emergency as millions are evacuating and heeding the warnings. governor gavi

tropical storm hilary passing through southern california right now. that was a positive report from san diego. >> we're seeing bands with that particular storm move from one place to another. flood warnings through l.a. county and ventura county through 6:00 tonight. i think the worst of it now is starting to lift north of san diego and eventually some of that shorwe activity overnight as we go to sleep and you wake up tomorrow morning, some could be on the bay area's doorstep for tomorrow morning. right now, muggy, 93 degrees. san jose, mostly cloudy skies. you don't have these 90s and have mostly cloudy conditions and relatively high humidity in a few places. 91 degrees in livermore right now. about 83 in oakland. look at san francisco, 77 degrees. as that midlevel tropical air surges in, lows tomorrow likely upper 60s and 70s to start things off tomorrow. a chance at scattered showers. cloud cover will keep daytime highs down but that humidity will make it feel very sticky. humidity will be high. 78 degrees, san jose. mid-80s in liverme.or 70s, bay

but this is not related to hilary. not yet. monday morning is our brush with hilary. so anything we see tonight, few isolated showers for the inland parts of the east bay. now we look at tomorrow, and look at the clear, defined line. that's the leading edge of the cloud shield from what will be the remains of hilary. i've taken us into tomorrow at noon, and once we get into the afternoon, watch what happens. some of the showers get pulled into the bay. by those showers, i mean very weak remnant moisture that could potentially turn into an occasional isolated thunderstorm. that is possible here. that's different. it didn't look that way 24 hours ago. but that's a small piece of our aspect of what our experience will be from this, and it's going to stay that way through monday. if you look at the bigger picture, though, look at hilary. now you can see all that rain down to the south. when i check back with you in the complete first alert forecast, we'll talk about the parts of southern california that need to be the most on guard for this because some places in particul

this is one example of the damage left behind from hilary.ng a flashlight because it's so dark. i want to show you where the tree split in half vertically. part of it landed onto the home where it damaged, of course, the roof, there's a lot of water damage in the home as well. firefighters were able to rescue the couple, who were inside of their bedroom. like i said, thankfully, they weren't injured. you look at the damage and you think how dangerous this situation is. then over to your right where the other half of this tree fell onto the home, the front yard, it also downed some power lines. folks with socal edison came out and assesdsehe damage. they tell me three homes are left without power here, so not too bad when it comes to the power situation. again, the home obviously red tagged. the road, obviously, blocked off as well. when we talk about all of the other downed trees in the area, our meteorologists have been tracking wind gusts as high as -- or as strong as 78 miles per hour in some areas of l.a. county. so it has been a major is

this is hilary taking aim at the south land and throughout the southwest.a's governor now deploying national guard as intense rainfall threatens his state. fox weather max gordon live in las vegas and his trip with more on how it will hit there. hey, max. >> well state of emergency has been declared here in clark county and it is going to be a soaker in sin city. now in the las vegas metro we're talking about about an inch of rain or so. but in the mountains to the west, we're talking about 4 inches upwards of that potentially even 7 inches in some places. and all of that water has to go somewhere a flood watch in effect until monday also looking at a high wind warning 25, 35 miles per hour winds with gusts up to 60 miles per hour all this is going to be hitting later on in the day. as you can see lots of people still walking around in the las vegas strip and some people they say they're not too worried about it. take a listen. >> you know what's funny is yesterday it was raining and our plan to do a fried month free experience and we were going to tough it
