labor secretary hilda sol ills. -- solis. thank you very much for coming in.'m thrilled to have you in on a day when we have good news to report on the u.s. economy. is this the turnaround americans have been waiting for? >> you know, we have to base our figures on a month-to-month basis. but i will say that if you look back last year at this time, the unemployment rate was 9.8%. and since that time, in a 21 -month period, we've actually seen three million jobs created in the private sector. and sometimes that's lost upon people. but we do have to underscore we still have a stubbornly high unemployment rate. but we're doing much better than we did in the last recession. in part because of what the president set out by reducing payroll taxes, extending the unemployment insurance, that took place last year in december. we do it again, we can see numbers hopefully going down and job creation going up. and then we can truly see some changes. and i believe that the public is now on our side. saying why not move ahead and do this? >> ok. but 300,000 workers dropped

and i think we should all be concerned about that. >> labor secretary hilda solis is with us. thanks so much for joining us. you've got good numbers obviously, 8.6%, you've added 120,000 private sector jobs. that is all good news. not must have to keep up with population growth, yet you still have a steep climb and 315,000 americans no longer are even looking for work. so a big part of that is that americans have just dropped out, dropped out of the labor portion. they're not being counted any longer. >> part of it, too, is also that we're finding that there are a lot of people in the household survey that's also taken that are actually beginning their own businesses. they're creating hair own job and that also has a lag period. so i would say that we have a ways to go, but we did drop. last year the unemployment rate was at 9.8. can we do better? absolutely. that's why i think the president's plan to come up with alternatives like stepgd the pay rom tax will all help put people back to work and also generate more activity at the local level so people will spend money. and tha

joining me now is hilda solis.ere would we be if republicans had the pleasure of republicans working together to rebuild this economy? >> well, it sure would be nice if we could do what the president said and have everybody work together before the year's end to pass the payroll tax extension that will help 160 million families, not have to worry about paying higher taxes. in addition, saving those family, five million people, who would be cut off from unemployment insurance, unless we do something for next year. there would be a real dismal christmas and the year upcoming wouldn't look so hopeful. so i'm hoping that we can get people together. in fact, the president has worked very hard. last year at the same time, reverend, if you recall, the unemployment rate was 9.8%. >> right. >> and it has gone down and we have created well over three million private sector jobs in this economy on the average for 21 months. you could say that 160 private sector jobs have been created and you could not compare that in the bush
