what about in capitol hill?re we going to see legislation to get rid of his bump stocks, or are we just going to see a tweak to federal regulations? >> well, it remains to be seen and it's probably too early to say. but based on how the debate is starting to turn, it's looking like it's going in the direction of a regulatory change, at least that that would be the preference of republicans, who, of course, would be in position to bring up legislation. i mean, as you know, the n.r.a. and congressional republicans have been totally allergic in recent years to any type of gun controls. so the fact that they even are willing to take a step on anything is significant, yet these devices are very little used, confined to kind of a narrow group of enthusiasts. so anything that's done on them is not going to be terribly significant. >> president trump is the wild card, eli, in all of this. >> he has been so far. i mean, he's been much more decisive and emphatic and quick to react in other situations than he was about thi

what are the differents on ends of capitol hill. >> i always worked on capitol hill and i thought gave me an advantage trying to cover the white house. i think your challenge as a white house reporter, are' you're working in a competitive space and some of your sources working out of the west wing. to a certain extent a lot of the job is trying to figure out get the latest statement they're putting out, trying to figure out what's true and not true, and in the age of trump things have changed a little in that regard, but one of the benefits i thought bringing to white house coverage. there's a lot of truth, and one of the things i learned early on, a, you can track down information by people on capitol hill even though you were sitting in the west wing and they provided a different perspective that was really volumab valuable. they're working day-to-day working on the beat and the white house-- especially now that i'm working in television, the white house is a physically enclosed small space and that presents a unique set of challenges. i love covering capitol hill because it's one of

what's the snap reaction on capitol hill? >> of course law makers in both parties are offering condolences for the victims. they are talking about how evil this whole incident, this massacre was. there has been talk especially among the democrats of some new gun control legislation. there is very little chance that happens. i think actually there is no chance that's going to happen. but there has been talk about it. there is going to be a press conference today. gaby giffords, a former congresswoman from arizona who was shot in 2011, they will she willing on the capitol today talking about this. democrats are going to be pushing for new legislation, they are going to have other pressive ends today. i think you will see democrats introducing new bills, particularly something to do with either background checks or pardonly something on bump stocks or slide fires. these are devices that help semiautomatic weapons mimic automatic weapons. i think you are going the see some legislation possibly offer on that or proposed legislatio

in our hills it's breezy as well, 37-mile-per-hour in spring valley, okayland hill at 36 and atlas peak the wind gust to 32 miles per hour and in knoxville creek earlier a wind gust to 50 miles per hour so that's why we're having those issues in the north bay with those fires, not only spreading quickly but hopping over highways at this hour. we had that happen in 101 around santa rosa, where the fire jumped the highway line. future tracker wind gusts we want to show you this map. we can't show it to you enough. this is the time line of the winds throughout the day today, 4:00 later on today about an hour and a half from now we don't expect much change in the wind speed in the north bay, really strong winds 36 miles per hour in fairfield, likely seeing stronger wind gusts around santa rosa around 44 miles per hour and by 7:00 in the morning o outside of the north bay the winds are going to generally calm down but still the north bay is going to have some issues later on by 7:00 in the morning, 29-mile-per-hour wind gust in santa rosa, 36 in fairfield and the wind direction stays pretty

flowing down our hills. and what that does, the air temperature rises the wind speed up. it drives out our atmosphere, and that is just conseussive for those fires to not only quickly start but quickly spread. the encouraging news at this hour, those winds that were so active earlier this morning, it's quite a different picture tonight. and this is what we want to see. we want those winds to back off. essentially calm winds in nev, 9 in fairfield. thetes about 40 miles an hour difference from where we were about 24 hours ago. even in your hills about 1,000, 2,000 feet in our air we're not all that breezy. so the winds will be the biggest issue going through the next 24 hours. future tractor wint gusts as we walk you through hour by hour, firefighters are going to have about a 24-hour window from now to have these winds that are essentially less than 10 miles an hour. the winds are going to be on their side. but what we are watching, you do notice those winds later tomorrow night do increase a little bit. tom
