our lauren fox is on capitol hill right now. lauren, we heard from the house speaker kevin mccarthy say if it means losing his job to keep government going, he's willing to do that. at the same time, he talked about a short-term funding bill, a proposal that might be up for vote momentarily. what are the chances of that? >> reporter: the big question right now is, will it pass? i think that is an open question. house democrats are trying to squeeze in a quick caucus m meeting to decide whether or not they want to back this effort. because republicans are bringing this bill under a suspension of the rules, it means a large number of democrats, almost 100 perhaps, would need to get behind this legislation to get it across the finish line. that is the big question right now. a lot of democrats are very frustrated, feeling like they're getting squeezed at the last minute. this legislation republicans are bringing to the floor, would be 45 days to keep the government funded through november 17th. it also includes disaster aid, but no

. >> we are live from capitol hill tonight.itadel of our democracy where democracy is not exactly working as it should be. the government is on the brink of shutting down tonight with house republicans voting in this hour on some of these stand-alone spending bills. the even if they can get these votes passed tonight and that is very much an open question as we are speaking right now, that alone would not prevent a government shutdown. a shutdown of course is not just a formality or something procedural but it would actually create a lot of pain for a lot of regular americans. tonight, house republicans are essentially at war with one another, not just over funding the government though. even with no agreement insight on funding, the government house republicans held their first hearing in the impeachment inquiry into president biden today. but it did not quite go as they expected or planned for it to go at least, as the hearing was deemed even by republican colleagues and unmitigated disaster many because of things like this.

what do the next 48 hours look like on capitol hill? >> that sounds more like a tactical optimism for speaker mccarthy than anything reflecting the dynamic on capitol hill, which is bleak at the moment, where a shutdown is concerned. the two chambers moving on opt sit tracks, moving in different directions, i should say, with two days to go before the deadline. the senate is later this hour continuing to vote on a bipartisan bill that keeps the government open through november 17th, and it includes some additional assistance to ukraine and disaster relief funding. they're hoping to wrap that up quickly, but if they have to go through all the procedural motions, it could take until sunday or monday after the deadline just to pass the senate bill. and in the house, the situation is not looking good either. mccarthy is passing republican only appropriation bills on a party line vote that reflects his party's priorities on spending cuts and various conservative policies that have no chance of becoming law, and meanwhile, you have president
