hill was white. she grew up in a union family in new hampshire and attended the university of new hampshire and worked as a social worker. abani hill was black. his family had fled the south during the great migration of the 1920s and 1930s. they ended up in philadelphia, where he grew up and attended college and became enmeshed in the national association for advancement of colored people, which was at that point the most prominent civil rights organization in the country. both them. then, by the time they married in 1960, were passionately committed to civil rights. they were prominent members of the acp in portsmouth, new hampshire, where they lived. they were involved in activism after this experience. then they went to their minister. they were unitarian. it's a denomination with which very much believed in science and in progress. and they were gratified when their minister believed them. they also went to the u.s. military, which was second nature to americans in those period in those years. i

and he tracked down betty and barney hill. he tracked down benjamin simon, the psychiatrist who hypnotized them. he performed a number of interviews with all of these people. and then very, very quickly, within only a few months, wrote a book called interrupted journey, which was simply a kind of narrative account of what had happened to them and a narrative of their hypnosis. he included a good portion of the transfer reports of their hypnosis sessions. however, i think fuller did well. one primary thing. i think that obscure aired the truth about this encounter and what we might understand it today. he went out of his way, and i think it's understandable that he did this because it was the mid 1960s. i mean, he did not want to be controversial to downplay the fact that they were an interracial couple and to downplay. i think the racial anxieties of barney hill in particular felt. he argues in the book that they experienced very little racial prejudice, that it wasn't on their minds at all, but the hypnosis transcripts tell a

but tonight crews remain in the oakland hills monitoring. >> what's left? many people now back home say they've been doing everything they can to minimize fire risk around their properties and those efforts certainly paid off. kron four's. lindsey ford joining us live from the oakland hills with some of their stories. lindsay spoke with a man who helped keep his mother's home safe from those flames. >> yeah, his name is chris dobbins and he has lived in the oakland hills area. his whole life. he tells me he grew up and watched his father practice fire mitigation at his childhood home and years later, he is taking on that role to make sure his mother's home is safe from fires. >> every year we have to cut down all the weeds and all of the brush. >> chris dobbins and his wife live in a condo in oakland hills. but he's still staying busy doing yard work, not for his home, but for his mothers is the area that burned down where i live down below. it was unclear and you have a lot of eucalyptus trees which you know, invasive not native to this area. >> so when th

lima beans are planted two to the hill, an inch and a half deep. large seeded bush type complete the early garden planting. some vegetables need thinning. dick uses a garden hoe for the rough part, but finishing is done by hand. the charred is being thinned to 6 to 8 inches apart. the only way to get weeds out of a row of carrots is by hand, right now when they are small. a common fast growing weed will quickly crowd out venl tables if not -- vegetables if not pulled. thinning carrots is a pain in the back, when seedling carrots are little and no mistake, but these young folks have keen eyes and nimble fingers. weeds grow fast, in this grand process, there's no tool that gets them all, but the hoe makes the job easier between the rows. careful, not too close or too deep, you might cut the outer root. a horse cultivator may do the job much faster. this implement has attachments that will plant seeds of almost any size in rows or in hills. now the pests begin to work, worms, beetles, bugs, hoppers. who said gardening was just pleasant exercise? here'

upper 90s and low 100s are common east of the oakland hills, 101 in concord, 102 in livermore. we have another day of this tomorrow, maybe not quite as hot as today, but we still have the excessive heat warnings and heat advisories that were extended for parts of the bay area into the first half of the weekend and likely through sunday, especially farther inland. let's look at tomorrow for high temperatures as we compare the forecast highs to normal for this time of year. we'll still be 10 to 15 degrees above average around the bay, 80 in san francisco, 86 in oakland, 15 to 20 degrees above average farther inland, not 25 plus degrees departure from tuesday and wednesday, but way above where we're supposed to be in early october. antioch and brentwood the heat risk will drop one category tomorrow from very high to high, but heading into saturday temperatures bounce up again. we'll be back into the very high category likely both saturday and again sunday. air quality is not going to be great, but it should be like our temperatures fractionally better tomorrow, moderate across the

a lot of our hills and mountains around the bay area. but this weekend the wind starts to calm down and when we think about how dry the vegetation is, the last significant storm we had with about a half inch of rain was may 4th. so that was a long time ago. and the vegetation is as dry as it can get as our temperatures today. head for the low 70s. it will be 72 for the high in cupertino, 71 in morgan hill, and we're seeing some low to mid seconds for much of the east bay. with oakland's high today, 73 degrees and 79. in antioch near the coast, it's going to be in the mid 60s. daly city, 66 and 70, in san mateo and san francisco, a windy 68 degrees for the outer sunset. the district will be in the low 70s, and the wind will pick up here a little bit sooner than the rest of the bay area. in the north bay. we're looking at a high of about 77 from napa up to santa rosa. so we are seeing an approaching area of low pressure across the pacific northwest. not much of an impact to our sky condition or rain chances, but that's going to help create

next moved to henry house hill. the fighting of the 1861 battle where they again repeated the process. minus the cornerstone went on this one. when both shafts had been completed, the soldiers traversed the battlefield, collecting shells to adorn the monuments. i think if we look back at grove ten monument in particular, you can see all the shells that they had collected on henry hill. one side of the obelisk was inscribed to the memory of the patriots fell at bull run, july 21st, 1865. the grove. the monument was identical, except for the name and dates and the reverse side of the both monuments had a simple plaque read erected june 10th, 1865. the very next day, trains leave washington, d.c., for a monument, dedication. so they're finished on june 10th. by june 11th. there is an impromptu monument dedication again attended primarily by soldiers. some of the generals who had been there on the field, but also it included civilians. i know it's always risky to show these colorized photographs, but i like to use these
