inside capitol hill, house gop itself will decide if they fall in line with their comrades in the senate or stage rebellion demanding changes to the fiscal cliff compromise. hello, everyone. i'm richard lui. here's the latest in the fiscal cliff talks. 2:00 a.m. we had a deal sfr the senate with strong bipartisan support. then this afternoon around 3:30 p.m., we heard that they would amend that bill and that there was not support for it from leaders. the house will then take a look at this, but we are hearing that the senate will hear none of it. they will not accept an amended bill. but for the second time today, the house gop caucus met to discuss the way forward with the senate bill itself. house speaker john boehner emerging sfr that latest meeting after proposing two options. first is an amended bill that would cut around $330 billion in spending. republicans would then see if they had the 217 votes needed to pass the new bill. if they can't get the required number of votes, they would bring the senate bill to the floor for an up or down vote tonight or tomorrow morning. let's bring

house. but, first to mike emanuel live on capitol hill. so, mike, where do things stand now? >> well, rick, on the house floor as we speak right now, they are counting votes. they are seeing if there are 218 voted in the house of representatives to essentially decide to go forward with adding spending cut amendments to the senate-passed bill to essentially see if there is enough support to pass the house. if they have that, they say they will go forward with a risky strategy of ending a spending cut amendment to that bipartisan deal. if they don't have 218 votes, they say they will go forward with the bipartisan deal that passed the senate, bottom line, here is why house republicans don't like this fiscal cliff deal. >> the senate bill failed miserably in cutting spending. i know that we can address that in debt limit. i think a lot of us believe that we have to address it today. >> and, of course, house republicans are being warned that this is a risky strategy. there has already been a threat from the democratic leadership saying if the republicans try to send this bill back

hill. the house of representatives. the house expected to vote this hour on the senate's fiscal cliff bill. and it's not an exaggeration to say that the health of america's economy may hang in the balance right now. you're going to want to stay right here and see what happens. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer in for piers morgan. this is a real nail-biter we're watching, despite a threat by some republicans to add an amendment to the bill, an amendment that would have added over $300 billion in spending cuts and would have forced the bill back to the senate. the house is now on the verge of simply voting up or down on the senate bill as it stands. the package would increase taxes on individuals making more than $400,000 a year and couples making more than $450,000 a year. it would also extend unemployment insurance for a year for some 2 million people. and that house vote is expected to come this hour. we're watching it very closely. let's bring in our senior con

house and the senate wrote it. more to come. >> as always. kelly o'donnell on capitol hill. our chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd joins us now. chuck, there are some voices out there saying, good for the house republicans, they're standing on their principles. but a lot of voices are also saying, how much longer is this going to take? >> reporter: it may be a new year but old habits are dying hard with this congress. we're in the last throes of the typical theatrics that have been the norm in washington over the last couple of years. there's going to be a few more shenanigans before the night is over. but they're probably going to end up voting on this bill. if they don't approve it, do realize, if they don't approve it, the senate is not going to take up any bill. and that means this entire fiscal cliff miss will not be solved at all. they'll have to start all over with the new congress which gets sworn in in two days. and it could take weeks and everybody's taxes go up. it doesn't -- not just $250,000. everybody's taxes go up. so it could be
