that might protect the bottom of the hill but it doesn't do anything over the hill. >> it has long been my understanding that the city of san francisco says and the building department takes this position that there is no one buildable lot -- unbuildable lot. i wonder if this is realistic. >> if money is an issue, we can develop solutions that will mitigate the impact. that a solution can be eliminating the hill, that can eliminate the problem. or build a structure right into the hill so there is no longer an exposed face or bold enough of iraq together so that it acts as a big buttress to prevent further movement. -- or hold enough of the rock together so that it acts as a big buttress. we are allowing the wall of the building to act as a retaining structure. there was a time when we did not get any. there was an epic one before in 1982. we brought with us and rainfall charge. >> you were saying that this is somehow correlated to rainfall. this goes from 1914 until 2006. it is the red line in the backgrounds which are the annual rainfall from each year is plotted on here. you can see i

peter schroeder is joining us live on capitol hill from the hill newspaper. thanks for being with us. >> my pleasure. >> first of all, what kind of reaction did the president's budget get from people like senator kyl and the testimony today from the treasury secretary? >> the reaction immediately from republicans up here on capitol hill was not one of pleasure. they were eager to criticize the proposal saying it piles on debt doesn't do enough and increases taxes some people say are essential to get the economy running giving their running small businesses and trying to create jobs. meanwhile your treasury secretary geithner among a number of other administration officials trying to defend this proposal saying it's the right thing for the economic right now and includes some targeted stimulus but also down the line includes provisions it they say will address the deficit and help get the nation's fiscal footing right back on the right track. >> you have two sides of this argument, the democratic whip and the house of representatives steny hoyer saying that th

the years that it was up here, it gave the name telegraph hill. it survived although the structure is long gone. come to the 1870's and the city has growed up remarkably. it's fueled with money from the nevada silver mines and the gold rush. it's trying to be the paris of the west. now the beach is the suburbs, the we will their people lived on the bottom and the poorest people lived on the top because it was very hard getting to the top of telegraph hill. it was mostly lean-to sharks and bits of pieces of houses up here in the beginning. and a group of 20 businessmen decided that it would be better if the top of the hill remained for the public. so they put their money down and they bought four lots at the top of the hill and they gave them to the city. lily hitchcock coit died without leaving a specific use for her bequest. she left a third of her estate for the beautify indication of the city. arthur brown, noted architect in the city, wanted for a while to build a tower. he had become very interested in persian towers. it was the 1930's. it wa

hill. could you comment on that? >> i have written an extensive chapter with lots of footnotes called the "smooth volley that doomed the confederacy." it's documented this ripple of fire which moved up the line and eventually came to where jackson was wasn't miles away, it was bfs three-quarters of a mile away to the south down a straight line of confederate troops. on their far right, they ran into a gaggle of federals, captured a general in the process and it seems to have spread up the line. i think that's pretty surely what happened. but you can decide for yourself with all the evidence in front of you if you look at that chapt chapter. hill was not wounded, which was pretty remarkable. jackson was about 100 yards away from the smooth bore muskets which an amazing number of confederates were still carrying with the war half over in may of 1863. he was just about at the extreme range for those muskets and hill was right next to them but they missed hill and hit jackson. >> we have a call from fredericksburg, virgi

whitney houston has been found dead in a beverly hills hotel. she won a grammy award a half dozen times, but it was a career marred by drug abuse and repeated attempts and promises of recovery. police in los angeles confirm that 48-year-old whitney houston died at the beverly hilton hotel where she had been a guest. >> at approximately 3:43 p.m. this afternoon, the beverly hills police department received an emergency call from the beverly hilton hotel. >> police in los angeles were offering little clues as to what might have caused whitney houston's death. >> in the hotel on the fourth floor, they were attempting reseesation measures. there were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time. and it's being investigated by the beverly hills police detectives. >> like scores of entertainers and their interages, she was in l.a. for tomorrow night's grammy awards and all the glitter and red carpet treatment. >> saturday night, every radio station was paying tribute to the music diva who sold over 170 million albums and singles. >> whitney wa

houston died yesterday in the beverly hills hilton hours before she was to attend a pregrammy party. 48 years old and poised to make a comeback after battling drugs for years. houston's body is in the los angeles county morgue waiting an autopsy. the beverly hills police say they will release information on their investigation tomorrow. >>> we have a team of correspondents following this story. casey wian covering the police investigation and entertainment reporter kareen wynter covering the reaction from the music industry and the mood thus far at the grammys and deb feyerick in new jersey getting reaction in whitney's hometown of newark. we'll get to all of them. let's begin with casey wian in los angeles. what is the latest on this investigation? >> well, fredricka, as you can imagine beverly hills police are being careful about what they say less than 24 hours after the death of singer whitney houston. what we do know is beverly hills police department received a 911 call yesterday afternoon, 3:55 p.m., responded to the beverly hilton hotel, excuse me, 3:43 p.m. the call came in.
