so the storm is moving in near hilton head. it's about 20 miles southeast of hilton head, and there's the eyewall there moving onshore with its strongest winds and very strong, very heavy rain. so that's going to be moving onshore, and then parallelling the coast right onshore there, and then it's going to be turning just offshore near or just south of wilmington, north carolina. so we're still going to have a surge here from charleston up to wilmington. so that's the deal on that. as far as rainfall, it's really coming down in torents down there, so as much as four to eight irchtion of rain will fall on parts of south carolina, parts of north carolina and southeastern virginia where norfolk may pick up more than seven inches. some of this rain is going to be pulled northward. we're not going to get the hurricane here at all, but some of it may be pulled northward. i'll show you that shortly. so what's going to happen with this thing? it's going to start turning and moving offshore near or just turn down like this, weakening ov

there's hilton head.we're about nine miles or so from this -- the worst of it -- strongeste of the winds. we just saw wind gusts of 60-miles-an-hour and this is pulling off towards the north. it does look in the last couple images that it's started to make this a little bit of a right turn and northeast turn if it can make that sharp enough, it would keep it off the coast. it seems unlikely to me that it could make that sharp of a turn. i think we're going to be seeing at least the outer band here, or that -- the most inner band make some sort of interaction with the land and the wind speeds are going to go up pretty dramatically. we're almost at 50 there in savannah, hilton head, at 46, but you get an idea. very, very quickly, this is going to rotate in there and we're going to be seeing those winds get pretty extreme in short order around hilton head and a lot of storm surge moving into that area. we're already seeing the storm surge, the waters there, high tide is right around now for a lot of these sp

now just a little northeast of hilton head. as this continues to track the shore, this is the issue between savannah and charleston, we may see landfall. then continuing to brush against charleston through 2:00 this afternoon, dropping to category one, very dangerous. that track turns to the right, passing near wilmington and still by sunday early a.m., 80 miles per hour winds. this will clip the outer banks, meaning the area will see plenty of rain and storm surge issues. that starts to drop back down to the south as we move sunday into monday. that's the projected track of hurricane matthew. most models in agreement with this arching to the south moving through the weekend. for the radar image, this is what we're seeing currently. the eye currently very close to shore at this point. if you zoom in, red, orange, yellow, heaviest rain is the eyewall and most dangerous part of the storm. look how close we are to the center of the storm to the coast. 11 miles. this is a very dangerous situation with something so close to the coas

matthew a few miles east of hilton head, south carolina. it's a category ii storm moving northeast of 12 miles an hour. make landfall in south carolina before that hugging the coast of south carolina. today it's hugging the coast of north carolina overnight tonight, and it should continue to weaken to a category one hurricane later on this evening and overnight tonight tonight. it curves out to the atlantic and may do a complete loop back toward at bam has. by then there will be almost nothing left of it. there's a question as to what eventually happen with the remnants of matthew. the big story will be rain. charleston, and the worst of it is going to move north of charleston. the cove alplains of north carolina, to get a foot of rain in parts of north and south carolina. there's the center right now, worst the weather from hilton head to charleston. notice as i zoom on out, some of that moisture extending all the way up into new york ahead of a cold front. that cold front is headed this way. with the cold front some of that rain, and some

hilton head, 90 mile-per-hour gusts and a lost downed trees. they're saying that was some of the hardest hit locations overnight. in charleston, they've had about a foot of rain, and on top of that, they had like the third highest storm surmg over the city's history. there's a lot of water on the coast. we have yet to get reports from the beaches overnight. they're saying it's not going to be pretty because of the storm surge and wave action along the coast. you see the eye came very close, over the northern eye wall, over the top of the hiltond head area. now it's moving parallel to the coast. the heaviest bands are located just north of charleston right now. and you're getting a break from the rain in charleston. on the back edge heading toward the southern south carolina coast. the heavy rain is moving up the coast. you see the storm paralleling the coastline. we may never get an official landfall. the storm will weaken from here on out. the latestgust, 87 miles per hour on hilton head. we'll see the most wind damage. all of the beach areas

two hours ig in hilton head, high evidence we saw. charleston, 43. a 30 mile-per-hour range, when you get into the 40 range and 50, that's when you can start to get some of the power outages and we did see peak winds, savannah 71. tybee island highest. a lot of downed tree, from tybee island to hilton head, where a lot of tree damage happened. especially hilton head a lot of trees blocking roads that fell all over the place. looks like match sticks in those areas. the afternoon high tide around 2:00 this afternoon. storm should be close to the georgia towne area at that time. worried about that location on the coast, and end up towards myrtle beach, around a five to seven foot storm surge expected. over top the dunes and cause additional damage in those areas with a lot of water getting into the streets. outer banks, high tide not an issue. the storm will be far enough to your south. the path takes it along the coast and out to sea going through the next couple of days. alex, people asking, could this come back and hook and get up? people excited see

wilmington, myrtle beach, charleston, savannah, hilton head area, you are still staring at this, very nervous. evacuated, as you should have. if you're still thinking about it, you should. the storm surge is going to be the issue. even though you see it going from a 3 to a 2, it's going to be very close to the coast and because of the angle of approach, it's moving along the florida coast. that's avoided the storm surge to the south of the eye. once it gets up here, those winds are piling onshore. that water is not able to escape. that's why the worst storm surge is going to be later today, into tonight. he's the radar image. eye safely off the coast. the hurricane force winds are in this core right in here. as of now we haven't had that onshore, and that has prevented a lot of the horrible damage with that. notice the path it took, this black line. this was the saving grace, this jog it took around yesterday afternoon. that really helped us out. we take the black line, the forecast that's been tracking and we're going to parallel the coast today. as we watch this western eye wall her
