john hinckley jr.ilty by reason of insanity for trying to assassinate president ronald reagan and seriously injuring brady in 1982. brady died monday at the age of 73. on friday, the m.e. ruled that his death resulted from the gunshot wound he had received three decades earlier. hinckley is still being treated at a psychiatric clinic. he's allowed to spend as many as 17 days per month at home with his mother. so could he be convicted of murdering james brady? i'm joined now by nbc news chief justice correspondent pete williams. pete, i was sort of taken aback by this. is there any precedent for this type of charge 33 years after the fact for the death of someone who was originally found not guilty by reason of insanity? >> appears not to be so it's a very open question here. first of all, there's a question of proof. was the bullet wound the cause of his death 33 years later at the age of 73. the medical examiner's conclusion is not a legal one. secondly, there is a legal question here. there is a gene
