i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. chris eyre, you are the most well-known native american film director in the united states. welcome to our show. >> it's great to be here; awesome. >> hinojosa: but let me ask you something. when people introduce you like that, are you kind of like, "okay, i am native american and i'm a film director, but," you know, "i can be both things and separate things at the same time"? yeah, i mean, it's awkward for me, just because, you know, as a person, i hate to wear that, even though some people identify that. but it's good to make work; i mean, that's what it comes down to. it's good to make work, and for me, it's just as an artist-- not as a native person or an american person, but as an artist-- it's important to make things that kind of explore, you know, who we are as americans, who i am as a native american, what tribalism means, and so that's all just, yoknow, part of it. >> hinojosa: you, though... the film that everybody has seen-- smoke signals-- was extraordinary, because it wa

a room... >> yes, our art room. >> hinojosa: ...that is open... >> one potters wheel. >> hinojosa: ...and there's music coming out? >> yeah, he has jazz music on, he's got a coffee pot-- most important-- and he makes a great, big, old ceramic bowl, and i'd never seen that done before. it was magical. >> hinojosa: now, you were, at this point, a kid who was, like... >> drifting. >> hinojosa: ...drifting. >> yeah. >> hinojosa: you could have easily gone down the wrong road. >> an african american male drifting in america is highly in danger. you're either going to get yourself killed, or you're going to go to jail, or something in between. >> hinojosa: and part of the reason why you were drifting is because the messages that you were getting... this is 1960... late 1960s. >> correct. >> hinojosa: so as a young african american man... >> the streets are on fire, riots are going on, dr. king was assassinated. these were very turbulent times, and people were in deep rebellion. and so what i saw was rebellion, drugs, violence, aot oreal regressive behavior that surrounded everybody in that

i had to write the answers. >> hinojosa: by hand. >> by hand. >> hinojosa: with a pen. >> or a pencil was available. so i decided that if i don't do anything, if i go and sit in a corner of my cell, i would start thinking about my family. and i knew thinking about my family would break me down. so i decided that i have to do something to keep my body at least in good shape, quote-unquote, you know? and since i'm a fanatic about exercising, i like pilates, i like walking, i decided to do pilates in my cell, and i decided to walk up and down the cell and count. so by doing pilates and counting all the time, it stopped me from thinking about that. >> hinojosa: did the women guards who were guarding you think you were a little crazy? here's this, you know, grandmother... >> 67-year-old woman. >> hinojosa: who's doing pilates and exercising in her cell. did they think you were... or did they look at you and say, "maybe i need to learn something from haleh"? >> well, it was interesting. some of them would come to me and say, "could you teach us some of the movement to tighten the muscles of

i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. sonia nazario, welcome to our program. >> it's great to be here. >> hinojosa: you wrote an amazing book called enrique's journey, and this documented the journey of one young boy from honduras who spent 122 days leaving honduras to come and find his mother in the united states, and he did it all alone. and you spent five years essentially recreating his story and reporting this book. and i have to tell you that the reporting in this book is extraordinary. >> thank you. >> hinojosa: i mean, you actually... you meet this little boy whene's 15 years old on the u.s./mexico border, and what makes you decide to say, "i'm going to tell the story of enrique"? >> well, i wanted to tell more broadly the story of these millions of women who have come to the united states from mexico and central america. you know, around the country, we know these women. they clean our homes, they clean our offices, they take care of our children. among latinos, they are women in our families. they've come here b

i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. ralph nader, it's great to have you on the show. >> thank you. >> hinojosa: so here's the first question i want to throw out to you, because, you know, you're a consumer advocate. as a kid who was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, you know, ralph nader... everybody knew what you were doing. but paint a picture of what our country would look like if you hadn't existed; if you hadn't, you know, brought in the regulations, what would our country look like? >> well, me and a lot of other people. >> hinojosa: okay, but... >> but well, for example, we wouldn't have mandatory motor vehicle safety standards, we wouldn't have recall requirements for companies who sell you a defective car. we got through meat and poultry inspection laws; there were virtually no inspection standards of diseased meat and all the illness that comes from it, never mind the fraud. environmental protection-- there wasn't anything like that in washington. legal services for the poor-- this came out of the 1960s as we

wow. >> yeah. >> hinojosa: wow. >> yeah. >> hinojosa: how are you processing that?ause it's a total, "whoop!" >> it is, it's a flip. >> hinojosa: you don't have to work. >> yeah, yeah. well, i do have to work. >> hinojosa: i mean, you have to work. >> i'm working on my novel right now. i do speaking engagements. and i'm taking some classes, hoping to be able to get into a ph.d. program. but no, i no longer have to work at a fast food joint. i no longer have to go from harlem to the upper west side and clean white ladies' houses. so, you know, my life is really blessed. and in some ways, my life... now i can look back, that i don't have to do any of that anymore, and say my life has really been enriched by all those experiences, because i am a child of the working class. and i have an... because i've come through that, i will always have an allegiance to writing about the working class and underclass. and now i feel more than ever that i have a responsibility. and not a responsibility to produce what people want, but to keep telling the-- i love al gore-- the inconve
