i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. alfredo corchado, you are the mexico bureau chief for the dallas morning news. as such, you spend a lot of your time covering drug dealers, the traficantes, the narcos, the kidnappings. this was not the mexico that you would have been reporting on 20 years ago. it's a whole new mexico. >> well, i actually came to mexico, and my real passion back then was covering immigration, covering the us-mexico relations. and when i left mexico in 2000, i left mexico for washington, because i thought the story had died in mexico, you know? >> hinojosa: the immigration story. >> the immigration story, but also, you know, mexico now had democracy in the year 2000. and so i figured that maybe the story was going to be washington and mexico city. so i moved to washington. three years later, september 11 comes around, there's no mexico story. i mean, there's no real us policy to mexico. and i returned to mexico, and my first assignment was to cover the women of juarez-- you know, who was killing the wo

>> hinojosa: i suppose not. so it's hard to predict, but give a sense... okay, fidel passes, raul castro, 78, passes. then what? >> oh, that's a good question. i've been thinking about that a lot lately. there's no one person i see. i think the military might start taking a bigger role. >> hinojosa: and what does that mean? i mean, is that a positive thing? >> it could be. >> hinojosa: really? >> yeah, it could be. i think there are some reforming elements in the military. the military plays a pretty big role in the economy now. and the companies some of these former military guys run are run extremely efficiently. but i'm not sure, like, what form the government would be in. i mean, i don't know if it would necessarily be a military junta. but i do think the military would take a stronger role. i mean, the military is really the strongest institution that exists in cuba. more so than the communist party, i would say. >> hinojosa: all right, so we've got one minute left. let me ask you this question-- you think

i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. melissa harris-lacewell, it's so good to have you on the show! >> it is incredibly wonderful to be here. >> hinojosa: so your book, barbershops, bibles, bet, is kind of a very important book in terms of understanding african- american political thought and formation in this country, but you have said that you have moved on from that book. >> ( laughing ) yeah. >> hinojosa: that you love what you did there, but that you kind of have moved to a place where you're looking at things now more from the perspective of an african-american feminist. so who are audience in... you know, you don't hear a lot of talk on mainstream television about african-american feminism and feminists. >> no. you know, it's so interesting to hear people respond to that first book, 2004. you know, i started that book as a dissertation, right? it was sort of a set of a set of explorations, of ideas-- me trying to figure out a lot of how i thought the world worked in terms of race and politics-- but very much infor

i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. eve ensler, playwright, author, activist; welcome to our program. it's great to have you here. >> well, i'm so happy to be here. >> hinojosa: so if people don't know, the thing that you are most well-known for is your play the vagina monologues, and what's amazing is-- because as i was prepping for this, i was thinking and i was reading everything and i was like, "my god, you know, ten years ago, that word-- 'vagina'-- would have not been said, you know, on public television." so when you sit back and you think, "wow, i really have had an impact," i mean, on many levels, but on that particular issue-- the fact that you have changed how one word about a woman's most intimate anatomy is seen and discussed. what does that mean for you? >> you know, it's really hard to evaluate what you've done, you know, and it's actually not for me to figure out... >> hinojosa: and you're such a humble person, i know that, but... >> what i feel good about is that people seem to say the word more, and wh

went out to help chairman hinojosa work for a city council person, right? so it is not just, the federal office. we're working on the granular level. and so that's been my commitment. and i've been actually put my feet on the ground and spent time, supported candidates, sent money and giving of myself to help resolve conflict. i think in the west, state of california and, over time i think i have run out of time. but i will tell you more in a little while. >> thank you. i promise i didn't pay jackson for that question but i'm glad he did ask it. in my eight years as president of the acc i've been to every western state at least two times some nearly a dozen times. i have come every single time. i got to take that back. i have never been to hawaii in the last eight years, and if you want to send me, i'm willing to go. new year's sounds pretty good. no, i have been there, there has never been a committee or a meeting that did not include western states in the conversation and to cut it real quick, if you have got any concern about my commitment to the western
