basically between the white house and senate democrats where not just senator duckworth, but mazie hironoing to the white house and talking to him about the fact that in the president's cabinet there are no asian-americans representing any of those positions. we've talked about how diverse his cabinet is and the figure heads in it. we know the vice president's heritage, and we know katherine thai, the next trade representative but those are not major cabinet level positions. they were pressuring the white house saying they need to have some of that representation, giving the national conversation we've been having around not just that shooting last week but, of course, the pandemic. now she is saying she is going to vote no on all no diversity nominees coming out of the white house until they commit to make that move. we've asked the white house about this. they haven't gotten back to us yet. we should note that last night when they brought this up on the call, they brought it up to one of biden's senior advisers who pointed to harris and katherine, but they don't think that is sufficient

even though most of the cabinet is confirmed but he still can't afford to lose these senators, mazie hironotammy duckworth, these are important democratic votes going forward. >> reporter: that's exactly right. both of the senators have backed off of their threat, they backed off late last night their threat to not support any nominations going through the senate unless they were minorities. this came after a tense exchange that they had with a biden official. they want the biden administration to prioritize the aapi community in light of this uptick of hate crimes happening in the aapi community with the start of the pandemic. and duckworth was upset because she felt that the white house was brushing off her concerns on this issue. now that they've both backed off of this issue, they backed off because the white house promised to implement a senior level aide that would make this topic a priority, the aapi community a priority, but they both have still shared their discontent with the fact that the white house does not have an aapi cabinet secretary. this would be the first time in 20 year

and you not only co-sponsored a resolution with mazie hirono condemning anti-asian hatred, but you at one point were threatening to block biden nominees over the lack of aapi cabinet members at a sensitive time like now. you have since backed off that. why? has joe biden done enough on this issue for you? >> well, we came to an agreement, and i'm very proud there is now going to be an aapi senior staff member in the west wing. and then there are other things that we have talked about doing, and really raising the visibility of aapis within the biden administration. so we had very productive conversations. and if you read my book, you'll know that, you know, really standing up and representing those who may not have a voice has been something i have done ever since i can remember. >> yes, and you have amassed a series of firsts in your political career in public life, i know. and that ended with you ending up in the senate, representing the state of illinois. let's talk about january 6th and the senate. what was the attack on the capitol like for you, and what do you think of ron johns
