what lessons historical or otherwise informed this extraordinary turn of events?for central banks of course there was as always deeply ingrained fear of inflation that was nowhere deeper than germany did in the memories of the two hyperinflation after world war i and world war ii and it translated directly into european policy given the determination of its plan french president to demonstrate. what's harder to understand i think is the u.s. experience. i will remind you the fed was unwilling to make the commitment to do what it takes to fend off the deflation until the first two rounds of quantitative easing they were both limited in size and duration. the u.s. hadn't experienced hyperinflation in the 20s or any other time in its history but this didn't prevent commentators. the lesson of the 1930s that when the economy is in conditions with interest rates near zero and ample capacity the bank can expand its balance sheet as it has without igniting inflation. those lessons were lost from view into the more loudly the congress accused them of debasing the currency
