i'll come back to ho chi minh in a few minutes. we tend to reject what has been called the doctrine of immaculate causation which seems to be implied in the idea that you can identify a single cause, identify an independent variable. we historians tend to find monocausal history as unsatisfactory in terms of historical explanation. historians tend to have a weblike sense of reality everything connects. that can be frustrating to social scientists when we have discussions together. i also believe personally that it's important for historians to create causal hierarchies. it is not enough to simply say everything connects. i believe as a historian of decision-making that i need to produce a ranked order of the causes of whatever it is i'm studying if i'm studying decision-making. with lyndon johnson in vietnam in 1965, what i have tried to do in some of my work is to say ok, johnson chose to make vietnam a large scale war in 1965. how do i explain that? i decided mono causal history won't work. i cannot say he did it for this reason
