ho had chicken pox with children ho did not have chicken pox to try and increase exposure as a way of building up natural immunity. that's what happened in the 1980s. unfortunately, we're seeing a resurgence of this with measles because parents are very concerned about the risks of vaccination, particularly this link with autism which has been completely discredited. we must emphasize that. vaccination is safe and effective. but some parents are very concerned about this association with autism which actually came out from a study in the 1990s. it's just completely flawed. >> how dangerous are these measles parties? who is most vulnerable? >> the problem with measle, they're highly contagious. and we know that if you have good vaccination, the vaccination is very safe and very neglective. but for children not vaccinated they're very at risk of getting measles because it's so contagious. the problem is that for a percentage of children ho they can get issues with ear infection, and inflammation of the brain pneumonia. these can result in children being in hospital and two out of three children will die from measles. >> gosh, that's so risky. how much immunity can you build up by these parties? >> the concept is if go to the parties and develop measles it's kind of considered to be natural immunity. but if not controlled, you're putting a child at unnecessary risk. the risk of the disease is much much higher than the risk of having the vaccination. so vaccinate your children against measles is a very clear message. this vaccination is safe, effective. and for those children that have the vaccine the coverage is excellent. it's over 90%. >> so we're seeing over 100 cases now in 16 states. what if you get the measles? what do you do? >> the important thing to say here is that in 2004 the number of cases were absolute lowest. ten years on we saw over 600 cases last year. we only have 34 cases in 2004. this is am that there
