tom, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. the fed is really working on high stakes here, it's walking a tight rope. it has to hit the brakes on inflation without crashing the economy. keep in mind we've had very low interest rates for years now. the fed trying to bring interest rates back up to something that's more normal but will higher borrowing costs now prove to be a shock to the system. from credit card charges to new mortgages to home improvement loans americans are about to pay even more. the federal reserve, charged with keeping employment high and inflation low pulled out a sledge hammer wednesday. coming down hard on skyrocketing inflation. hiking interest rates by three quarters of a point. the most since 1994. the fed's key interest rate, which consumer loans are built on top of, now runs at about 1.75%. and likely to rise to 3% this year with the fed promising more rate hikes to come. >> the current picture is plain to see, the labor market is extremely tight and inflation is much too high. >> the last time infl
