i remember, richard holbrook saying, go read this book and have this woman on your show.will change your sense of basic human rights and conduct around the world by governments. you have now had a different experience. he was a hero of years. you have -- yours. help us understand in a real way, what is that experience and what has it done for you? how has it changed, if anything, not to her values but a sense of your perspective? ambassador power: probably the part of government that is hardest to understand from the outside is the problem of bandwidth. scarcity of time in the day. i say that as one who works 18 hours a day, seven days a week it feels like. particularly these days, when there are so many crises happening. on a given day, i will go from central african republic to molly to syria to afghanistan --. cuba normalization. the sheer number of issues we are trying to drive toward improvement, closure on a given date is a large number. imagine if you are the president of the u.s. charlie: that is the reason the president has done everything he can to make his life

[laughter] and so i think it was the right way. but as someone who followed in your footsteps, and followed in the 70s i was on the senate aging committee staff when you're briefly on the committee. and it's terribly upsetting to see what has happened to the house and senate and it just seems as though there's more concept of [inaudible] and kenny see any way out of this situation? >> i do not perceive any change in the immediate future. and i say that there is regret because i share the common assessment of how unfortunate it is that there is such a parent dysfunction in the congress. and one of the first person i called was bob dole who was the republican leader in the senate and i went to the him and i said to him you have been here 25 years and i have only been here a few years and you know more than i do but i have been here long enough to know that the senate cannot unction. and i said i'm here to tell you how i intend to behave towards you and ask that you behave the same way t

they reflect it rather quickly and said holbrooke (-left-paren months earlier. we need a permanent representative in new york. so they gave me my hearing on the 13th, which is tuesday wednesday, thursday. that friday night i was come armed by the entire senate along with voice vote and a couple hundred other people waiting for senate confirmation. having been delayed six and having waited desperately to get a hearing, it happens in a couple days time and i made it up to new york. iraq came onto the agenda fairly early on. with the change of administration in 2009, there was a deemphasize of the iraq and afghanistan conflict i would say, but all the while maintaining a robust counterterrorism policy as opposed to a counterinsurgency pilot ama policy of trying to build the iraqi and afghan nations. we put less emphasis on night and we been putting more on the counterterrorist aspect. probably the next timeframe if you will and perhaps the one we are in now is the arabs burying and its sequel. it was i say the next watershed starting with tunisia in early 2011. sin
