this speech is the inaugural richard holbrooke lectureer. he was the special envoy to pakistan who died last month. her speech sets the stage for the upcoming visit of china's president next week. we will have a full report at 7:4 5 >>> some alarming financial news from the biggest city in the bay area. pam cook has all the details coming in >> reporter: san jose hit a major financial milestone last year but nothing to brag b more than 13,000 individuals and businesses in the city fileed for bankruptcy protection. that's up 16% from the year before and also a record for san jose. analysts say this year could be even worse as the job market continues to be weak the trend is the same in other parts of the bay area. in oakland, bankrupt court said 15,000 fileed for bankruptcy last year, up 20% from the year before. the numbers from the san francisco division are not complete. but 4700 bankruptcy fileings were processed, up 500 from 2009. many of the people now fileing are part of two income familyies but many have found that both careers have b

the schools on the cutting board include glenn brook middle school, holbrook elementary, wren avenue elementary, monty gardens and sequoia elementary and sequoia middle school. trustees expect to vote on the the school closures. there will be three total, by february 8. >> what started as a drug bust ends with discovery of explosives in the east bay. hazmat crews cleaned up the gunpowder at the storage unit on 680 south of highway 4. the contra costa team says they got a tip about the possibility of drugs at a storage unit. when they came to check they found a back pack with five pipe bombs. the bomb squad evacuated buildings and stopped traffic on the highway and used a robot to blow up the bomb. a woman renting the space where the pipe bombs were found has been arrested. two others were arrested for drug charges. >>> a san francisco man is accused of hacking into at&t network stealing 100,000 e-mail addresses from ipad users. customers were targeted back in june. 26-year-old daniel spitler appeared in federal court. the fbi says spitler stole the information to damage apple's image

holbrooke elementary is one of the several schools facing possible closure. tomorrow the school board will meet to go over the recommendations in the advisory committee. there are three possible scenarios. each one results in the closure of three schools. each one upsets parents and children at each of the respected schools. >> i understand it is $1.5 million to cut out of the budget, but to put sequoia on one of the scenarios doesn't make sense. >> why would they close it anyway? >> because of money the school trustees are expected to make a final decision on the closures very, very soon. >>> meanwhile, a school police officer shot a map to death in oakland outside a school dance over the weekend. the shooting happened at 9:15 saturday night near joaquin miller park where skyline high school was holding a dance. the two officers who worked for the oakland unified school district approached a man and woman sitting in a parked car on joaquin miller road. the district says there was a confrontation. the man tried to stab one of the officers with a screwdriver.
