. >> holly morris is there to get a look at this new venue. ood morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is not just a new venue. this is going to be a new destination venue. think of it as a hip, artsy living room that you want to hang out and see what is going on. jim byers joined me to talk about artisphere. and when they say this is a trail-blazing new cultural center, what exactly does that mean? >> it really is. especially in the united states. this is really -- it's not so much about buying a ticket for one big star that you will come and see and then not return for six months until the next thing you want to see. this is a place where we want the community to come and hang out in the wi-fi cafe, come for regular salsa nights and swing nights here in the ballroom, 3,000 square football room and just engage with the arts. >> reporter: this is 3,000 square feet of the 62,000 square foot space that you have here. when you talk about cultural campus, you mean it. tell us what we'll find in the different spots here. >> absolutely. we have the

i'm holly morris.e ready to get wild on this thursday as we are live at national geographic where they are gearing up for this saturday's world animal festival day and they're having a festival centered around two new exhibits starting with where we are right now. geckos, tails to toe pads. and you should know more about geckos and the fact that they are good for hawking insurance. we are going to learn about the wild animals. and they have another exhibit called wild music which has to do with wonderful sounds animals make in the wild and their own musical masterpieces that we will explore. but this is all gearing up for the wild animal day festival put on by the museum. and it is a full day filled with interactive opportunities that you and your kids will love to explore. gurvir. >> it sounds fascinating. thank you, holly. >>> that will do it for the 6:00 hour of fox 5 morning news. allison is in for the next few hours joining steve. good morning to you. >> good morning, gurvir. >>> coming up on fox

i'm holly morris and on this wednesday we are going to show you just how much a difference a day canve at the people's co-op in southeast and by the end of this day in that space right there, there will be a brand spanking new playground. you won't believe this when i say this. there are about 60 kids in this neighborhood and they don't have a playground to walk to and play on. so who is responsible for this? an amazing group of volunteers is coming together. kraft food services, shire, and kaboom are the people building this playground. people from the neighborhood will come out here and do some sweat equity as well because they believe obviously this is something that needs to happen. and it's a big effort nationwide to help fight childhood obesity, and hunger in the process. if you are interested in knowing who designed the playground, well the kids in the neighborhood put some input in this past summer so you can bet they are excited to see what will be here at the end of the day. they are just gearing up now and there is expected to be about 200 volunteers to come out and take p

i'm holly morris.now about you, but one of my favorite sounds of the fall season, marching bands. and this morning we are live at austin hill high school where this weekend they will be hosting the 9th annual oxon hill band invitational. there are bands coming out and competing and we have three this morning to feature. and we'll talk about the marching band community, how competitive it is and how they go about preparing for a competition like this and what the judges are looking for in terms of a marching band competition. it should be fun. if fact they said they might make me an honorary marching band member this morning. i don't know what i can play. maybe flags or baton. but we'll go through the patterns and talk with the administration about how this brings people around the school and get excited. some of them come as far away as north carolina to be part of the competition, to be a good fall morning. and they've already given me my own oxon hill high school shirt, complete with my name and ever

[ music ] >> reporter: and as they play, i want to bring in doreen, who is the invitational chair. she joins me. so tell me how it will work on saturday? >> we'll have ten bands performing and eight of those bands will compete. we have three schools from north carolina, one from washington, d.c., ballou, and four bands from prince george's county. they'll be competing. and the oxon hill band will perform and they will do their routine. and then we'll have our host accu and that's montgomery state university and they'll performing as well. >> reporter: so this is a big deal. people get excited about it. and it's got a name if people are coming up from north carolina. >> one year we had michigan schools and schools from ohio as well. so it's a big deal. >> reporter: and so you encourage all family to come out for the day. >> it's only $10. not much at all. children 4 and under are free.
