that like so much else that is happening here does not bode well for egyptian democracy. >> glor: holly williams, thank you. we're joined by former undersecretary of state nicholas burns. how do you assess the power struggle that is going on right now? >> well, jeff, this is a big and dramatic moment in the course of the egyptian revolution. you have, if you will, the new egypt represented by mohamed morsi and the islamists and muslim brotherhood against, versus the old egypt in the court system, people appointed by a mubarak and the issue of course as you know is will there be a constitutional assembly that will proceed with a new constitution, will that proceed or will the court strike it down. i think the islamists have the advantage right now. morsi does because he has tremendous public support from his movement, and there will be dueling demonstrations on tuesday. i would expect the muslim brotherhood dominated that demonstration to be the larger one. >> the other question is what account u.s. do, what should the u.s. do? >> this is going to be a difficult balancing act for the oba

holly, given the scale of the protests, is there any sign morsi might change his mind? >> reporter: wellwhen president morsi addressed the nation today he sounded very firm and if he were to backtrack now, that would be a big loss of prestige for him. let's be clear, many egyptians support him. they elected mohamed morsi because they want a conservative muslim as president and they want him to push ahead with his program of reforms. but for many more liberal egyptians, they feel angry. they say that the egyptian revolution has been betrayed and they don't show any sign of backing down, either. now that leaves egypt, a country with so many problems, a country that's so important in the broader middle east, deeply divided. >> mason: holly williams, thanks, holly. what's the reaction at the white house? chip reid is there with that part of the story. chip? >> reporter: good evening. the only official reaction has come from the state department which says morsi's actions "raise concerns." in a written statement a department spokesperson says "one of the aspirations of the revolution was to e

holly williams is in cairo with more. good morning. we saw a big escalation in these protests yesterday. what happened in tahrir square overnight and then again this morning? >> reporter: good morning. well the crowds are dispersed now but yesterday we saw scenes that were reminiscent of the egyptian revolution of two years ago. at tahrir square which you can see behind me the birth place of that revolution was carpeted in tens of thousands of people who poured in from every direction. they even chanted the same slogan they chanted during the revolution the people want the downfall of the regime. this time the target of their anger is not the old dictatorship but the country's first elected president, mohamed morsi who they accuse of overreaching himself before i assuming sweeping new powers. >> egypt and the u.s. have a very important relationship. what side is the obama administration taking in this crisis? >> reporter: well, u.s. criticism so far has been extremely muted. some people here in egypt are disappointed by that. the u.s. government is really in a tricky situation because it's relying on president morsi to help with peace efforts in the israeli-palestinian conflict. last wee
