in soma, they began to bury the dead, and holly williams is there. >> reporter: fathers, husbands, brothers and sons-- they all lost their lives to turkey's worst-ever mining accident. this small town is stricken by its grief. some here seem unable to bear the anguish of their loss. but with more than 100 miners still unaccounted for and little hope they'll be found alive, they're already preparing for more funerals. we still don't know what the final death toll will be here in soma. every new body discovered in the mine means another fresh grave and another devastated family. at the mouth of the mine, sevim goskun told us her son, ishmael, is one of those trapped underground. "i haven't slept for three days," she said. "the mine company told me he's dead, but i want to see his body." and now, turkey's agony has turned to anger. many here accuse their government of being too lax on safety standards and are demanding better working conditions in the country's mines. after visiting soma yesterday, the turkish prime minister, tayyip erdogan, was heckled by an irate crowd who called him a murde

holly williams is in istanbul for us tonight. holly, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, scott, the local mayor is saying tonight that 157 miners have died in this explosion, in this disaster. now, we haven't been able to confirm that figure, and the turkish government so far is saying only that 17 men have lost their lives. they're also saying that a number of people who have been injured in this accident have been taken to the local hospital. they're saying that around 200 miners are still trapped. other people we have spoken to have put the figure at 400 or even 600, and the reason for that confusion seems to be this disaster, this explosion and possibly also a fire afterwards, occurred during a change in shift at the mine. >> pelley: a developing story that we'll follow tomorrow. holly, thank you very much. today, u.s. spy planes continued searching in nigeria for more than 200 school girls kidnapped last month by islamic militants. among the aircraft is the sophisticated global hawk drone. >> reporter: these girls should be studying for final exams
