we move now to holly williams in northern iraq where a power vacuum left by government forces is being filled by local militias. >> reporter: we drove to the outskirts of mosul until it was too dangerous to go further. this is the last checkpoint before the islamic extremists are in control of the road and the men here are telling us that the militants are just 50 yards in that direction. just outside the militant's control and vulnerable to attack is the christian town of bartella. ♪ christians have lived here nearly 1,500 years. they say their prayers in aramaic, the language spoken by jesus. captain firaz jacob is in charge of 600 local militia men defending bartella. if the militants come here to this christian town, what will they do? we don't know, he said, but maybe they will do what they've done in other places and kill us. iraqi government soldiers trained and equipped by the u.s. were supposed to protect this area but instead they ran away. just outside bartella, we found this iraqi military tank, and the uniforms of the soldiers who abandoned it. >> the army is not popular.

holly williams is in irbeal tracking the sunni uprising. good morning. >> good morning. iraqi officials are denying of the biggest oil refinery and claim instead they killed 17 militants there. losing control of that would be yet another blow for iraq which depending on the oil revenues. internet videos show smoke billowing where the militants claim they've taken control of the refinery. and in this video shown online they're seen parading triumphantly through the town. other resources say the battle is still raging. 60 miles north outside of the city of kirkuk, they're also taking on the militants. but there's something else at stake here. kirkuk is rich in oil and a prize for whenever captures it. when the militants first swept through this region last week, iraqi soldiers abandoneded their posts leaving northern iraq to descend into chaos. the kirdish fighters are well disciplined. >> where's isis. how much further down the road. >> but their goal is to protect the region down the northeast and to push the militants out of iraq for good. outside of kirkuk. this is the

holly williams is in the northern city where they're escaping iraq.gs. postings show hundreds that appear to have been shot. they appear to show a mass execution. that's very frightening for others here who believe they koulsd also be targets for the militants. this is the last checkpoint that is now controlled by islamist militants. ten mile as away is the second largest city. the militants announced they'll impose strict islamic law. the men here are telling us they're just another 50 yards in that direction. just outside the militants' control and vulnerable to attack is the christian town of bar tell la. the locals told us christians have been living here for nearly 2,000 years and they still pray in aramaic, the language spoken by jesus. they're defended by 600 christian militia men. the iraqi government soldiers who were supposed to be protecting this area ran away from the islamic extremists. he's in charge of the militiamen and told us everyone here is frightened. if the militants come here to this christian town, what will they do? >> i don't
