let's turn to holly williams, again. , you have spent so much time on the ground in ukraine over the years. i want to ask you about that, because we heard the president zelenskyy. he did not flee and today he tried to call president putin and appeal, he delivered a speech where he said we will defend ourselves. when you attack you will see our faces, not our backs. can ukraine defend itself? how quickly could it fall if the russians sees the capital. >> reporter: so difficult to say. what we can say is that the ukrainians are massively outmanned and outgunned by the russians but they have about a quarter of the manpower in the military when we look at the hardware, just a frace talking possibly the biggest land war that europe has seen since the second world war, but this country is already at war, and has been against russia and separatist for nearly 8 years. it is a bloodied conflict, more than 40,000 people have already been killed according to ukraine. we have been near and around the front line in recent days, what h

we have team coverage on the ground this morning beginning with holly williams. she's in ukraine's second largest city, karkiv, 20 miles from the russian border. good morning. what have you seen there so far? >> reporter: well, forgive me if i'm not very coherent, we've been up all night. it was just after 5:00 a.m. local time that we started hearing explosions, a dozen, maybe two distributing weapons to veterans and volunteers. and then we heard this address from a -- a rallying address from ukraine's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, after the assault began urging ukrainians not to panic and saying you are courageous, you are unbroken, you are ukrainians. >> 5:00 in the morning, i imagine most people were asleep at that time. was there any warning this military attack was coming? >> reporter: yeah, just minutes before it began russian state tv aired a speech from russia's president, vladimir putin, in which he announced a special military operation. he said, quote, russia's plans do not include occupation, but he said that russia would seek to demilitarize ukrain

we begin tonight on the ground in ukraine with cbs' holly williams. >> reporter: in just a few short days, ukraine has transformed into a war zone. one russian missile hit an oil depot on the outskirts of the capital kyiv early this morning, according to ukrainian officials. and just 20 miles from the russian border, they've been fighting on city streets. the ukrainian authorities saying they're still in control. yesterday in kyiv, the battle came very close to us. we're hearing a lot of gunfire. obviously fighting taking place, we think about three blocks from here. we went inside a private hospital, which is now canceled all elective surgeries. instead, this doctor told us they have prepared to treat combat injuries. why are you staying? you could leave. >> it's my home. i'm in my own country. i was born here and i will live here for all my life. >> even if that means dying here >> if it means fighting for my home. >> reporter: ukraine's resistance has been determined, and may have taken moscow by surprise. video shared online shows killed and captured russian soldiers and destroye

holly williams is near the front lines traveling with ukrainian troops. >> reporter: as we approached the front line, there was heavy artillery fire. we estimate just a few hundred yards away. [ gunfire ] those sound quite close now and have been maybe eight or nine at this point. these ukrainian soldiers told us it was russian-backed separatists firing on their front line positions. ukraine's been fighting a war against russian-backed separatists for nearly eight years. these muddy trenches carve up this country. the ukranian military on one side armed by the u.s., and fighters in breakaway regions now recognized by russia on the other. in recent days, there's been an escalation in the attacks. some hitting civilian areas, sending people into their basements for shelter. "there's no electricity, no cell phone signal, and nobody cares about us," said this elderly lady. as ukrainians buried two of four fallen soldiers in a conflict that's torn this country apart. >> that was holly williams reporting. now u.s. officials say that moscow is arming the separatists. ukraine believes russia

cbs' holly williams just traveled to the front lines. ly, tell us, what are you seeing and hearing at this hour? >> reporter: good evening, jericka. tonight, we're watching those unverified videos online that purportedly show a russian military convoy heading into the breakaway regions of ukraine putin has recognized as independent. ukrainian officials say it's still not confirmed whether russian troops are moving in. russian-backed separatists in the region have been fighting a war against ukrainian forces for nearly eight years. today we went to the trenches of that bloody conflict. we traveled to the frontline with ukrainian soldiers. we're going to a position on a front line that ukrainians say is quite active, they say it's recently been targeted with artillery by the russian-backed separatists. ukraine says the separatists are trying to provoke them, and targeting civilian areas including the village of novognativka where they seem shell shocked.
