i'm heather holmes, and welcome to bay area news at 7:00. three felony suspects who escaped from alameda county's juvenile detention facility this afternoon have been recaptured. they escaped on fairmont drive near lake shabow. deputies captured them about a mile away. amber lee is joining us with a live report. >> reporter: we're at the substation here in san leandro where law enforcement officials are breathing a sigh of relief. they say these felons are very dangerous. two are charged with murder and the third, assault with a deadly weapon. at around 4:15 this afternoon, the sheriff's department received a call from the juvenile detention center in san leandro asking for help after they escaped. they scaled a razor fence to make their get away. in about an hour, law enforcement tracked them down less than a mile away in a residential neighborhood with the help of helicopters and canine units. >> one of the deputies saw three males matching the description running from the area, and at that point, they put up an inner perimeter, and one wa

i'm heather holmes. welcome to bay area news at 7. a new study suggests that head trauma from sports puts people at risk of developing a condition later in life similar to lou gehrig's disease. a former san francisco 49er was one of the main subjects in this potentially ground breaking research. janet is live in the newsroom with details. jana. >> reporter: heather, researchers say that this study is the very first to provide hard evidence of a link between head trauma from sports injuries and neural diseases. it could also have big implications for anyone in football, soccer, boxing, or other collision sports. when it comes to contact sports, blows to the head can be a regular part of the game. now a study, to be released tomorrow in the journal of neuro pathology and experimental neuroorology, says it's found the first pathological evidence that repetitive head trauma experienced in collision sports might be associated with the development of motor neuron disease, it's similar to a.l.s. or lou gehrig's disease. one of the study's ma

. >> and hello again everyone i'm heather holmes in tonight for julie haener. a union pacific freight train derails. it happens about 4:00 this afternoon, the impact on amtrak passengers it will continue well into tomorrow. mike mibach is live at the train station with the latest. >> reporter: we have seen delays, we have seen cancellations, and for the majority of the night, the tracks have been like this, empty. it has been a rough evening commute and the morning commute expected to be just as sluggish for thousands of commuters. for union pacific freight train derailed around 4:00 in the afternoon in oakland. a spokesman for union pacific says the train was rolling northbound when the train derailed. >> they just said a freight train derailed. and i asked if anyone was hurt, and she said no everyone was fine. >> reporter: because of that, they suspended service between jack lindon and emeryville. hundreds of passengers are being pulled off the train. placed on to buses and driven around the derailment. once they arrive at either jack london they get on a bus

i'm heather holmes. we begin with that destructive fire which sent four firefighters to the hospital. the four-alarm fire broke out shortly after 4:00 at 404 center street. it appears that the fire began in the building's attic. crews quickly arrived at the scene as flames shot out of the post office. smoke could be seen for miles. people gathered across the street. wind made the fire difficult to control. the two firefighters went to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. that fire tonight is under control but the cause is under investigation >>> a three-alarm fire in the san francisco district. it start after 6:00 tonight in a single family home on rondell place. fire officials say it spread to a nearby apartment building. there are no reports of injuries to civilians but two firefighters needed medical attention. >> we had two firefighters injured. one because of exhaustion and the other because of laceration. minor injuries. they are both okay. >> reporter: rescuers went door to door making

. >> and i'm heather holmes in for julie haener. >>> the fire is about five miles north of calistoga. the chp shut down highway 29 in both directions when the fire started at about 52:00 this -- 5:00 this evening. the fire is burning near robert louis stevenson state park. the fire consumed about a dozen acres by night fall. the highway patrol reopened highway 29 between napa and lake counties. firefighters say they claimed to remain on the front lines overnight to keep the flames from spreading. right now, that fire is about 40% contained. so far, there is no indication of just how it started but, again, cal fire says it has stopped thefire's forward spread. >> ktvu's meteorologist bill martin is in now to show us how the weather is helping the firefight >> reporter: the weather is everything. here we are in august. you would think a fire like this would be a huge, huge deal but look at the current conditions at the fire right now. we rarely see something like this. the winds are just 10 miles per hour. look at the temperatures, 53 degrees, the humidity at 83% may be double or triple
