>>> hello and welcome to our viewers all around the world, i'm michael holmes here in tampa, florida as we continue our coverage of the progress of hurricane irma. >> and i'm isa soares coming to you live from miami where it's just turned 1:00 in the morning. thank you very much for being with us. >> and yes, we continue our coverage from here in tampa. the storm is still a powerful hurricane, it's still a hurricane and it has weakened, and that has been good news for the people of tampa. if the eye of the storm has gone to the west of the city, there were great fears about storm surge causing havoc here. this is a city that is vulnerable to storm surge and has low-lying areas, a lot of development along the water. even some of the cause ways, the bridges are fairly low. there was a lot of concern. we spoke to the mayor yesterday and that was his worry. the eye have moved to the east, which is a good thing. we'll check how the storm surge is going to look now. i can tell you the water is still going outbound at the moment because of how the winds are going. the river here as dropped

. >> and welcome everyone, this is cnn's continuing coverage of hurricane irma, i'm michael holmes in orlando. >> reporter: and i'm isa soares in orlando where hurricane irma is already making her presence felt. >> and we'll check back with you. irma making access on cuba's coast late on friday. it's already gained strength as hurricane 5 storm and pushing northwest towards florida. sustained winds 165 miles per hour. irma not expected to weaken before hitting the florida keys earlier on sunday, that makes it a very unusual and powerful storm. the window to evacuate closing quickly. for the countless drivers who did heed the call to get out there is only one way out and that is north. but it's slow going, bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching to the horizon as you can see there. irma one of the largest storm reported and those who are stayi staying around taking a huge risk. emergency shelters are already filled with those who can't or won't leave their home area. the storm has left 24 people dead across the caribbean. in some places mind boggling. have a look at these images on your sc

holmes is there. t.j.? >> reporter: vulnerable, yes. hasn't seen a storm like this u since 1921 and an area that didn't get heads up that the storm was coming this way after it changed course over the weekend. tonight, tampa tested like never before. its harbor almost like a giant funnel. irma's winds already sucking water from the coastline leaving beaches of mud behind. this city hasn't seen a direct hit by a hurricane in almost a century. >> we know that we are ground zero for hurricane irma. for 90 years we have avoided this day but i think our day has come. >> reporter: the tampa/st. petersburg area has been called the most vulnerable in the country to flooding damage. scientists warned for years that a storm like this could mean disaster. half the people here don't even live 10 feet above sea level. the city will flood at just three feet of storm surge. the storm surge from irma could more than double. inundating thousands of homes and businesses. keep in mind, this is an an area that has seen population growth over the years. new
