james holt was among them. he returned this week to a grateful nation, more grateful than his family might have imagined. here's david martin. >> reporter: after 47 years master sergeant james holt came home from vietnam. met by his widow linda his two daughters and other family members. >> i thought oh, my god he's finally home. i thank god all-mighty that he's finally home. >> reporter: there was a military honor guard as you might expect, but no one expected this, a spontaneous honor guard of police officers. you saw all those police officers lined up. >> oh, yeah. it was quite amazing. >> reporter: thanks to cell phones and social media everyone can now see those police officers lined up. they just happened to be at washington's national airport greeting family members of fallen police officers arriving for an annual dinner. when they heard a fallen soldier was coming home... >> we just all fell together. it was perfect, almost like it was meant to be. >> reporter: holt was a green beret at a outpost called

i'm lester holt. for all of us at nbc news, thank you for watching and good night. >>> breaking news along the coast. a pipeline dumped barrels of oil into the ocean. this is happening near santa barbara. we're live as crews try to contain the spill. good evening and thanks for being with us i'm raj mathai. >> and i'm jessica aguirre. let's take you back there so you can take a good live look at this. this slick of oil or sheen is about four miles wide. you're looking at a live picture from our sister station in los angeles. their chopper is flying over it. this oil spill about 20 miles from downtown santa barbara. oil ruptured from a pipeline and gushed down the bluff to that beach today. within the last few minutes we've learned it's estimated 21,000 gallons of oil that spilled. that's according to the coast guard. you can see the wide berth of that spill around the clear parts of the water. workers discovered the leaking pipeline just before noon today but it took them about four hours to seal it a

i think it should be lester holt and i think it would be an uproar if lester holt was not given the jobto somebody else if brian leaves the network. >> let me ask this one last question. i think everybody would agree about this credibility thing but this is also a business and the business turns on the ratings. if the focus groups say brian williams would be stronger there may be those within the network who say find a way to bring him back. the world is a different place. america is all about redemption. brian williams can find a way to do that. what would your reaction be to that? >> that would be not good enough for me. i remember when journalism and the news divisions at the networks didn't have to make money. they just had to go off and do good work and win awards and that kind of thing. but when the networks were bought by different companies like ge and now nbc universal and maybe comcast, everything changed, and the news division was just like any other division and it had to have a bottom line that it met. you can't cover news that way with a budget that says you spend one day
