let's get to mike mccaul, the former chair of the homeland security committee. thank you for joining us. one of the big questions you have about the threat environment right now? >> i think it's a rising threat. when i chaired the homeland security committee, we had a lot of external operations like, you know, explosives on airplanes. then it morphed into radicalization on the internet. ping you asked that question earlier about the evolution of the threat, and so particularly the -- i would say the new orleans case was radicalization online, but we're worried about, in that case, his travels to egypt and what was going on there. abc actually reported there's evidence he met with isis operatives, affiliates. he was involved with a rare bombmaking material that was not available in the united states. so i know that they're saying this is, you know, kind of a lone wolf type of situation, but there are some -- seem to be some real isis connections here that need to be followed up, and the fbi and homeland security are working hard to scrub through the cell phones a

i have been in communication with the fbi the white house, and secretary mayorkas of homeland security. every possible resource has been dispatched to the city of new orleans and to downtown to make sure that we secure the area, identify any other possible threats be they bombs or any other devices. the ones that we're aware of we have detonated and that area is now safe. we continue to gather information. we know that it appears to have been a lone suspect who was taken down by law enforcement. we know that he was driving a vehicle that appears to have had texas license plates, this appears to be someone from the local metropolitan area. we can't say much more about any of the other information other than every possible resource with federal, local and state agencies being employed. we're in constant communication with the white house, with the fbi to make sure that we are securing the area for visitors and residents alike. this is a horrific situation. new orleans, of course, is no stranger to being able to manage large groups and activities. so be assured that you have the absolute

the homeland security team.ttorney general and all the team are updating the president on the horrific incident that occurred overnight. the fbi is taking a lead in the investigation and is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. the president says he is grateful for the swift response of local law enforcement for preventing even greater death and injury and i have directed my team to make sure resources are available. the president says he will receive updates throughout the day and will have no more to say until there is further information to share. we are expecting a press conference in the next hour or so from the authorities with an update on the investigation. a little earlier we got this from the new orleans mayor latoya cantrell. first of all, we do know that the city of new orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack. in place right now. that perimeter is still in place. sad to report the coroner is still at the location because the bodies are still under a tarpaulin as the initial investigat

the monitoring is being carried out by a team in the homeland security group, which is part of the ukng national security risks. well, a short time ago, our political correspondent helen catt who is in westminster, told us a bit more about this. this was a story that was broken by the mirror newspaper this morning, and it's understood that there are officials within a team inside the home office known as the homeland security group, which are looking at elon musk�*s tweets and those of other accounts which have large numbers of followers, as you said. now, this team is responsible for reducing national security risks and, according to its website, focuses on the highest harm risks to the homeland. now, what they're looking at is notjust the tweets themselves, but the reach, how far they're going, who is seeing them and also who is engaging with them. so the home office isn't commenting on this, but a source said it was being done to make sure that they were on top of whatever challenges were being posed by non—state actors. and as to when all this started, well, it's understood that t

i mean, what is homeland security doing? do you have any idea?>> i wouldn't speak for another department, but i will say that the way we do business is extremely collaborative in the interagency, especially with our state and local partners. >> who's taking the lead here on this particular issue, identify these drones and aircrafts. >> well, we have an investigation open, predicated on the idea that there's unsafe operation in the airspace, a federal violation we have some jurisdiction for. but it would help us know sort of what lane this falls in, when we know the people that are responsible and what this is all about, to your point earlier. and we're actively investigating and would like to answer those questions. i don't have a better answer. >> what if they were carrying chemical weapons? i mean, this could be already, this would be a much worse conversation we could be having right now, because these things have been flying all over new york, new jersey, over military installations. i don't know, i think, i don't know what's going on there,

i want to thank you to everyone at the department of homeland security, the department of justice, including the fbi for working nonstop to investigate this heinous act. the fbi is leading the investigation to determine what happened and why it happened, and whether there is any continuing threat to public safety. here is what we know so far. the fbi has reported to me, the killer was an american citizen born in texas . he served in the united states army on active duty for many years. he also served in the army reserve until a few years ago. the fbi also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that inspired by isis, especially in the desire to kill, the isis flag was found in the vehicle he rented to conduct this attack. possible explosives were found in the vehicle, as well, and more explosives were found nearby. the situation is very fluid, and the investigation is at a preliminary stage. the fact is that right now -- excuse me. there you go. the law enforcement and intelligence community are continuing to look for any connections, ass

the super bowl is truly a national homeland security event. that's a formal designation which means the weight of the world of federal security will be in place. all the federal agencies checking every potential vulnerability. the sugar bowl, significant security event in new orleans tonight. not federal in the same sense as the super bowl. but has all these different players. it's the other types of events that don't have the war footing. they may be vulnerability that will concern law enforcement more. the issues that they don't know about just yet. you mentioned at the white house put out a statement about the president being in touch with the mayor of new orleans. obviously that's symbolically important. it's also practically important because, yes, there are federal resources on the ground in new orleans right now. and there need to be for the super bowl in a few weeks when there are truly hundreds of thousands of people. and all that goes into the super bowl right there in those same areas we're seeing on the screen just now. what's more,

on the homeland security committee in the senate, mayorkas and teemac were supposed to come and they eled, they were supposed to talk about threats and our homeland. so they have just completely lost trust, lost focus, there is no transparency. i agree it makes no sense to have two significant events like this on the same day. >> jason: senator, you have also been a governor, highly successful, you know how this is supposed to be run on the local level and i'm glad you own a homeland security and hopefully get these nominees as quickly as possible, because homeland because homeland security and department of justice cannot be turned around fast enough, it is a massive task to do, more than 370,000 people between those two departments and agencies. good luck to you there. the department of homeland security and the fbi have kind of become collateral damage in that fight,luctant and prevented in some cases by law from dealing with social media firms to remove some of this really incendiary, violent misinformation. caroline: and yet this comes but days after the new year's day attack on a trump hotel, what happened in new orleans. the idea that extremist content is not going to be is monitored feels pretty scary. jeff: that's right. there is certainly a trend where we are seeing these extremist attacks, in almost every case the perpetrators carrying out these attacks are often talking about them online, whether on sites like meta or discord, as is the case with the mass shooter event of buffalo. the fbi and dhs are going to continue to investigate based on leads online but they are not going to interact with social media companies to remove that content proactively. they are going to leave that to the social media firms. caroline: within your story you build out the case that -- there is a key court ruling here that has pushed the dhs and fbi, but also
