michelle roberts is at the crime scene in santa cruz, we also have robert honda with us. robert? >> reporter: well, today's charges in court turned out to be a surprise. santa cruz police point out this woman is at the center of a real-life drama with many twists and turns in the investigation, and in the courtroom. accused killer alex entered the courtroom this morning nervous but composed. she was arrested last week for the drug overdose death of executive forrest hayes found on his yacht last november. they tracked her down with security video and records indicating the two had a relationship. court documents obtained by nbc bay area show the district attorney's office accused alex of injecting hayes with heroin and standing by casually as he dies, even stepping over his body to drink a glass of wine. a video captured her lack of concern. >> she made no attempt whatsoever to try to revive him or call 911. she actually started packing up her belongings. >> reporter: prosecutors surprised police by charging her with felony manslaughter instead of murder. the problem? getting pro
