kirk, how worried were you about honolulu? >> we were very worried, larry.riously. an earthquake 8.8 on the restrict ter scale was generated in 1960. i am from the town of hilo. that generated a 30-foot wave and killed 30 some odd people in a tsunami that struck in 1960. we were very, very concerned. the earthquake generated back in 1960, while larger, you know, we were fearful, therefore we took extreme action to make sure public safety was affected. >> larry: dr. kong, do you worry that people might not pay attention? >> what we learn is with every event we get a little bitter. we were able to make more accurate decisions. for instance, in this particular event the warning centers, the pacific tsunami center part of noaa issued its first message 12 minutes after the event. that is better because over the last ten years it used to take 40 or 50 minutes. we have made advances thanks to international cooperation. >> larry: kirk, do you think the populous understands that these things happen and forewarned is forearmed? >> yes. i do think you are right, larry.

mike von fremd is in honolulu this morning. mike? >> reporter: good morning, kate. it's peaceful in paradise again. for a few hours, tourists feared that the big one was about to hit. for hours, hawaiians watched and waited for the tsunami to hit. in the end, it did no damage. for tens of thousands, it was a day that began abruptly. with sirens blairing and officials telling them to hit higher ground. the tsunami was predicted to wash ashore just before noon. >> we just got in yesterday. we didn't expect to wake up with a sirens and warnings being pumped to us. it was interesting. >> reporter: pristine beaches that are usually packed were empty. sailors scrambled to get their boats out of harbor. anyone with a room near the ground floor was moved asap. >> i'm glad we're on the sixth floor. >> reporter: do you have an ocean view? >> we do. we're smack ocean front. >> reporter: while many enjoyed the excitement, old timers had reason to worry. >> i seen the one in '46 and in 1960. >> reporter: he's referring to the tsunami that hit in 1946. it killed 159 people and st

the last time they tried to evacuate that section of honolulu, there was gridlock, and no one could get through. >> that did not happen this time. this time everyone was ordinarily and the wave never hit. craig is live at the waikiki yacht club, and hi, brother, i know that you only recently arrived and describe what you're seeing, and is everyone breathing a huge sigh of relief. >> everyone is, and i'm in front of the waikiki yacht club, and as you see, the water is practical like glass here. the tsunami did strike, but the hawaiians were prepared. they received notification of the tsunami striking at 12:35, and they put out a warning which is a few miles from where i'm standing right now. i'm with ed tasherra, and how important was it to conduct those evacuations? >> it was important with an earthquake that was measuring in an 8.8 magnitude. even our tsunami warning officials were very very concerned. that an earthquake in chile, next to the water, along the coast with reads, would result in a very damaging earthquake to hawaii and other parts of the pacific. >> you know, they're pred

ly -- lee cowan is live in honolulu with the latest. >> reporter: the worst fears weren't realized but that was a wave big enough to focus the world's attention on it as it raced across the pacific and forced tens of thousands of people here in hawaii up to higher ground. it was the biggest evacuation since 1994. even though it ended up being a series of surges rather than a tsunami here, no one was crying wolf. there was every indication it could be every bit as big if not bigger than a wave that killed more than 60 people on the big island in 1960 and that was generated from a quake almost in the very same area as yesterday so people were taking this very seriously. sirens went off around 6:00 a.m. they gave people five hours of warning. they were stocking up on gas, stocking up on food. roads were clogged with traffic. a lot of people pulled over to the side and had tsunami watch parties looking down on the water expecting to see waves between six, eight feet, perhaps even higher. the navy sent about half a dozen of its ships out from pearl harbor. marinas were emptying out as pleas
