and the person that we are honoring today is john osaki. now you know, when you meet john, you might think he is privileged. the japanese youth counsel was a grass roots organization in japan town created by jeff mory. john was actually a participant in the program. he came up and i got his first summer job? gcyc. he has worked in early childhood development. substance abuse prevention. they have expanded the range to include college access. substance abuse. youth employment and youth leadership. just to give you a sense of how many people are served there are over 8 thousand children from all /*eugt ethnic backgrounds. they help over 3 thousand youth to be the first to go to college. they put over 2 thousand youth a year to work through employment programs. we have to increase that to 20 thousand. his program as in many ways, revolutionized the way youth are employed in san francisco. the organization is often called upon by leaders and city government to implement now programs. they are established by governor mayor gavin newsom. but beyo

harold shapiro was inducted into france's legion of honor yesterday. harold shapiro earned two bronze hearts and now the mount washington resident holds a new medal and a new honor. >> i get a kick out of that. >> reporter: a knight in france's legion of honor. >> this was an award that was started by napoleon. this is the highest honor they pass out. >> reporter: harold was just a teenager when he arrived on omaha beach. almost seven decades later he's honored for playing a key role in the liberation of france over nazi germany. >> the minister in giving the award he gave a little talk about each one of the exploits. he mentioned about me participating in taking out soldiers out of a building. something had to be done, it has to be done. you don't think, am i going to get injured. it's just second nature. >> reporter: shapiro and two other world war ii vets received the honor in washington yesterday on the anniversary of d day. the equivalent to our medal of honor. >> congratulations. >> great guy. >>> without a trace, what police are saying today abo

but the city isn't wasting time in honoring two of its heroes. tonight mayor ed lee will throw out the first pitch in their honor. lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter tony valerio both died fighting a house fire last thursday. the two veteran firefighters were first on the scene last week of the diamond heights house fire. reports indicate that the two were caught in what's called a flashover. that's when everything in a room ignites all at once causing a huge surge in heat and flames. the two were taken to sf general hospital. perez died on thursday. vincent passed away saturday. less than a week later, company 26 [ signal breakup ] a gathering spot for those who want to pay respects. they have gotten cards from hundreds of firefighters around the country. coit tower will be lit up in red tonight in honor of the two firefighters. the game starts at 7:15. mayor lee will throw the first pitch at 7:05. >> thank you, anser hussein, in san francisco. >>> attorneys for the man suspected of beating bryan stow says there is video proving their clie
