we had the honor of having dinner for one hour with woody williams, the congressional medal of honorwinner at the 100th anniversary at the american legion. he was in his 80s. my god, he's like a young guy. my wife wrote an award-winning poem about woody williams. it's one of the marine corps, my grandmother's step brother served at bella wood in world war i. he ended up being stationed in germany, but woody williams is a great american. god bless him and god bless the marine corps. semper fi. >> david, before you go, do you happen to remember in any of that poem your wife wrote about woody williams? >> well, not right now, no. she starts off by saying he's a young guy, and then just -- and then part of it she says, and he served this country and never asked why. he did it because that's why what everyone is supposed to do. dswát+h)isk their lives. and he was a young guy when he went over there. my god. we were sitting there and he actually had the congressional medal of honor with him and he shared it with us. he was the guest of honor. we didn't even know that. when they called him

decent, trusted, honorable. i might add, i embarrassed her a moment ago with my other colleagues, she's selfless. i offered her other positions of greater consequence, more prestige. but she wanted to work with you, judge. she wanted to go back to the justice department. a top-flight prosecutor who took on public corruption, corporate fraud, and violent crime. chief of staff to the director of the fbi. the first woman ever confirmed as assistant attorney general for national security. where she elevated cyber security to a top priority, where it's even more consequential today than it was then. in the white house, she was a homeland security counterterrorism adviser to president obama and i in every one of the national security meetings. she coordinated our fight against al qaeda and isil. she helped lead our effort in the ebola crisis. when the bombs went off at the finish line on patriots' day in boston, her hometown, she coordinated the federal government's response with local and state law enforcement to get

and so, at that point, that intrinsic value of honoring the veterans, honoring those who served, is alittle more -- they aren't here to acknowledge that, to feel that recognition. and so in a way, in a very spiritual sense we are doing it for them but we are really doing it for ourselves. it is an act directed toward ourselves whereby we honor and remember them. and that leads to the other two main purposes i see in memorials. one is very much an educational purpose. memorials can be more or less didactic. obviously in kansas city you have the museum right there. so there's a very incredibly strong educational component. but the memorials in washington tend not to have strong educational components. they teach a very broad level and hopefully inspire further education. at the world war i memorial, which we'll look at shortly, we recognize that this was a war that many americans did not know very much about, particularly relative to the later wars of the 20th century, or earlier wars like the civil war or the american revolution. and so we have incorporated a lot of over educational ma
