it is my pleasure to introduce our fourth honoree. she is president, current president of the board of directors of the indian health center, and might agency is located in san jose for those of you that have not been there, it is in the southern part of the state. a little joke there. lee says connection -- lisa's connection with these surt luck or destiny. she moved to san jose and was working as a litigation attorney for an intellectual property law firm and finishing the prerequisites for medical school. at least twice a day she would drive down meridian ave and go past a strange looking building that defined itself as indian health center. she would think to yourself, i should see if that place needs volunteers. one day she called, and of -- beloved physician we had identified a project for lisa and actor -- ask her to consider joining the board of directors. with leases unique legal and medical backgrounds, benefits from having both in a single board member we save some times. thank you. and her commitment and leadership have he

it is my pleasure to introduce the third honoree. they are enrolled member of the great nation of montana. she is a great wife, sister, mother. the teacher and practitioner of cultural traditional wellness and spirituality. she has worked in various roles at the native american health center in san francisco. some of these roles include hiv outrage, medical assistance, and prevention work. she has had critical roles in spirituality and practitioners. she helps the agency address complex needs. they are reaching, finding, and assisting those most vulnerable. the most essential healing element is developing and fostering positive relations with community building activities, cultural arts, spiritual practices, community gatherings, and many more. once a timber 4, 2010, she received an award and was recognized as a cultural preservationist. she is one of the five co- founders which began in 1998. since then, she has taught the members of the healing way is of dancing. she is facilitating yet another pow wow dance class in san diego. she

it is my pleasure to introduce our first honoree earl arniconie. he has lived here in the bay area for the past 22 years with his wife brigitte. currently working as the workforce investment act program coordinator and for the united nations -- united in the nations of east bay, earl encourages native american youth and adults to finish their high school, diplomas, as well lead g d's, an enrolled in vocational programs to further advance their training. he also assist those who want to achieve a higher educational degree by promoting recruit and and retention of native american students throughout indian country. as earl is a veteran of the indicted states marine corps and a graduate of the seattle police academy, he assists native american veterans in the pursuit up careers in law enforcement. he is also known through indian country as a noted and see for powwows and special events, such as the kqed unsung hero award.

[applause] >> and i heard the supervisor kim has joined us. thank you for being here. >> i look at david and jan and i would not be here if it were not for them. you have heard the professional side of it. 20 years ago, i was a very young reporter in montgomery, alabama, and our -- they decided, they had come out to san francisco and decided that they needed someone that looked just like her, and i was the only one in the newsroom in montgomery, alabama that look like her. do you know they forced me to do this show, and that started me on my road to coming out to san francisco and the bay area to live and work here and become part of the community. i thank jan for that. i had no idea who she was, but that is how i got my start in the coming out to california. on a quick personal note, 10 years ago, she says she works out, but she really just kind of talk to people on the machine at certification, asked a fellow should in london, a

our honorees tonight are among those who have. john dingell actually played a role in the joint session of congress long before he served. he was a page when fdr address the congress the day after pearl harbor. his job was to take care of a radio reporter. when the speech ended, john was supposed to turn the reporters recorder off. instead, he let it continue rolling as the house debated whether to go to war. the recording is now a critical piece of the capital's history, and frankly, the nation's history. on that day of infamy, daniel inouye was getting ready to go to church when he heard news of the attack. it came over the radio in honolulu. he ran outside and looked left and saw the sky and exploding with shells. he was a red cross volunteer, so he tended to the wounded and then went on to serve in the war. over the 70 years since these men have shaped some of the most significant moment in our history, today, they are the deans of the house and the senate. and the fact of their careers speak to their longevity, but is there c

in fact, the only ones that might object to that description are the honoree's themselves.f inflated ego and self-promotion, each of these sonnemann has distinguished himself -- each of these gentleman has distinguished himself through his modesty and dedication to serving this nation. in truth, this gold medal is no less than a simple recognition of all they have meant to america. as i said to mr. armstrong when he testified before our committee earlier this year, america's space program is as much about innovation as it is about rockets and space capsules. -- as much about inspiration as it is about rockets and space capsules. and the settlement are continuing to inspire. for decades ago, they led the way of america or ventured into this new ocean of space, as -- a day ventured into this new ocean of space, as president kennedy described it. and by the time they completed their work, america keeping our pre-eminence in space will strengthen our economy, create jobs for the future and benefit our society in countless ways. that will be the best way to truly honor the legac

did you know that there are three women members of fwn and honorees of the 100 most influential filipino women are mayors in the san francisco bay area? yay. i want to call up here -- come on up here, mayor of hercules, california. she was in the summit in 2006. do you want to tell the story ? >> congratulations to the 100 most influential filipino women. i attended first in 2006. and i was a planning commissioner then and i wanted to quit politics. i hated politics. but the summit inspired me. and merilee kept saying we needed more women in visible and a mainstream positions in government, commissions, and councils. so i was recognized in 2009, a couple of years ago. i was inspired by mayor joanne el rosario and the other women mayors around. so last year, i decided to run. and i won in november, not even a year. and little did i know, i was running into a burning building. hercules was crumbling. in january, the mayor resigned, so i became vice mayor. and then the rico movement happened and i became the mayor in june.
