(applause) >> i would also like to say that president chiu and others acknowledged that it takes a village to really support a healthier community, and i think they come out of, in many ways, the wellness center from washington high school in addition to rams and the community-based mental health services that rams represent. alison chin is a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 15 years of experience in community and human services. she began as a research assistant intern for one of the first u.s. studies on hiv, substance abuse in asian american populations and ms. chin has since worked with a range of culturally diverse communities of children, youth and families providing clinical assessment, hydrotherapy and health education. she's worked with rams since 2006 as a behavioral health counselor for teens and families providing culturally competent assessment therapy and crisis intervention ser

my honoree today is mr. fred martin. fred, if you'd like to come forward. fred is a long-time resident of district 7, right there in the heart of the district [speaker not understood]. to be quite honest, to be quite frank, mental health is not an issue that rises to the top of a lot of district 7 concerns. i don't hear about mental health issues often at neighborhood meetings, letters, calls. but fred always makes it his top issue. and this is a gentleman who has had a very long successful business career, who has made mental health advocacy really a great part of his life today. and he has done more than just about anybody else to educate me about issues in and around mental health. he's opened my eyes, opened my ears to a lot of issues that prior to coming to the board i had no idea about. and i'm very grateful to fred for doing that. and just within quite frankly the very parochial world of district 7, i give great credit to fred for making this issue far more prevalent in the minds of the residents of district 7, helping everybody understand maybe to g

[applause] she is the program prevention substance abuse coordinator at the health center. she is a mother of two and she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology. she serves as a board member for the american indian alliance of santa clara county and actively engaged with san jose inter community and works with healthy styles and life choices and has been chaired san jose power wow and held in year. each her they hold a sporting event to bring natives together to promote wellness. she believes in these events lie the developing in youth the sense of self worth and resiliency necessary for them to succeed. she prides herself in the design and implementation of an art curriculum that includes, but not limited to bead work, dancing and sewing and a firm believer in these traditions and intrinsic values instill solidity and pride in being responsible individuals in a contemporary landscape. in addition her years of dance experience has lead her to be a respected and decorated and so

[cheering and applauding] >> well, you know, what can you say about laura? i don't know that there are enough words to express what a special person laura is. so, it's truly an honor for me as the representative for district 9 to honor laura. just recently she was doing work technically in district 6, but with redistricting now, i can say that she's a proud member of the district 9 family. laura guzman has been working on community health issues in san francisco for decades. while studying law at new college school of law, she worked to provide benefits access to disabled communities impacted by mental illness and substance abuse. she also worked for the california pell project doing a medical and mental health history of a mexican national on death row. after law school laura began her work here in san francisco's mental health system as an outreach counselor for the then aids benefits counselors. today that's the positive resource c

it is reflective of the tribute that we pay for all the honorees. but as i just wanted to address you today, i wanted to thank everyone here in this room for coming together on this event every year to honor those in different walks of life that are contributing to improving our chances of being full equality for women. we still have a ways to go. there is so much to do but we have accomplished quite a bit. i know former mayor brown, who is not here yet, but he will be dashing in, let him know i said this. if he were the president of the united states we would be the 186th country it ratify cdal i say that because i know he and his history was the very first to sign up our city, it pass the ordinance when he was the mayor, to make sure we were on the road by abiding by those principles and then when i had a chance as director of public works i took up the helm for that department. you know, those years, they were really blue collar attitudes in public works, but we found the women leaders that we could acknowledge and promote and it became an even b
