another storm swept through honshu eight days ago triggering a small mudslide in a river near the volcano. >>> vongfong continues to make its way through japan causing damage and prompting evacuations. our meteorologist jonathan oh joins us with the details. jonathan? >> yes, we are continuing to monitor vongfong as it moves across japan. i want to point out to you that while this system is very, very large, it is still packing quite a punch. it has been downgraded to a severe tropical storm. but in the process, still bringing lots of rain, because of the moisture coming in from the southern end of the system. and as we go throughout the overnight period monday night into tuesday, this system is expected to clear, at least in terms of the center of circulation, off of honshu and off of japan as we go throughout the day tuesday. but, the wraparound moisture will still be bringing rain and some windy conditions, at least for the morning hours. i want to give you the perspective of how much rain fell during a 48-hour period as vongfong moved through the area in parts of kyushu, 521 millimete

it's going to be pushing this thing across the entire island, honshu anyway, headed up to the northeast in about 36 hours' time. i think again the main threat here will be the rain, the ongoing rain as again most of what you're seeing here is high terrain. that is going to be an issue for the potential of flooding and mudslides and landslides over the next 24 to 48 hours. this is huthu, the other tropical cyclone that we were covering of course in the bay of bengal. it's weakening. the rain still ongoing here. but the wind as it roared ashore was quite something here. 215-kilometer per-hour winds. show you some of the scenes. this is video coming out of visakhapatnam, but we just got fed in video of the area and i must say the damage is devastating. vehicles overturned here. but the airport, some of the terminals are gone. they're just not there anymore. as a result of this storm here. so incredible damage ongoing over the last 24 hours across andrapradesh in visakhapatnam. wind gusts of 192 kilometers per hour. category 3 storm that would be the equivalent in the the atlantic. main rai
