then john kennedy really did not like hoover and hoover really did not like on. but he especially did not like robert kennedy, the attorney general, his ostensible boss. in that case hoover knew an awful lot about the kennedys and they were concerned it would cost them the support of a southern democrats in their party. finally, richard nixon, by far his close this friend among the presidents. but as hoover started to get old and it defies some of what nixon wanted him to do, there are some funny moments where hoover says, that is illegal. j edgar hoover is the civil libertarian there. there is a moment where nixon sits down with hoover and says, edgar, you are in your mid-70's wouldn't it be fun to go? and it nixon says, ok and kind of gives in to hoover. who is more powerful the fbi director or the president? >> the fbi headquarters is the j edgar hoover building still today. what was his reputation among agents? >> i think the agents really respected hoover. he built the institution in his own image. really in the early years especially, hand selected agents t

i found the private papers for j edgar hoover, the private memos.were not in president johnson's regular archives. he asked his secretary to save them. what it showed is hoover was writing directly to the president sometimes three or four times a week with specific details. sometimes really petty details about martin luther king jr. and seems to have done great damage. i think the relationship between martin luther king jr. and president johnson was the greatest single relationship between an activist and president in our history, but that relationship was slowly undermined and destroyed by j edgar hoover's leaks and lbj's complicity. johnson was encouraging hoover to keep it up. >> how do you approach navigating the challenges of presenting a balanced and comprehensive portrayal of dr. king's life, considering his remarkable achievements and personal flaws? >> i think it's very important to be honest about our heroes. king was deeply flawed. he knew it. he talked about in his sermons. he was not perfect. i want to balance that so readers understand

they can't move beyond the the hoover the the hoover weight that's around their neck until this is over. we can't really underst. and that healing that has to take place if we don't work on wound that has to be healed. and that's how we're going to be able to move and start healing the much larger wounds. unless you can stop the bleeding, you'll never be able to heal those wounds. and unless we real honest conversations about all of this, we'll never be able to heal those wounds. we'll never be able to have the kind of relationship with each other and that the individuals in this country to have, unless we can heal these wounds. and so why leonard's cases important? we want leonard to be able to go home to to the turtle mountain band of chippewa on. they're ready for him. they're expecting. but we also need to get this done so that we can heal as a nation and can't overstate the importance of sending leonard home to doing that and at least starting that journey for all of us. so this case me up at night, it gets me worked up. and i'm the new guy to it. right? how would how would i feel
