. >> david roll is talking about "the hopkins touch". who was harry hopkins? >> he was a central figure in the administration of franklin roosevelt, president franklin roosevelt. he went to the white house for 3-1/2 years. he was the president's closest friend, adviser, confidante if anyone could see be a confidante to president roosevelt. he was married in the white house in summer of 1942. during the depression he put everybody back to work on infrastructure projects. during the war, he was franklin roosevelt's legs. roosevelt sent hopkins to england to russia, casablanca, he was involved in all wartime conflict. he was the president's post at pfizer. a very sick man, he was a social worker but preferred the company of a rich and the wellborn. hung out at a harem, he and his wife lived in the white house. didn't like it particular lead. they moved out and took a house in georgetown in 1943 but harry went -- after the president died in april of 1942, carry on his last mission with president truman, after that, got the best present of his life after that. he l

american astronauts rick mastracchio and mike hopkins start their work. the test inside their space suits, bone dry. they gave them a close inspection on monday, food who can blame them. one leak, one tear, and they are dead in an instant. i know you train for it. but is it scary when you're up there and there's nothing else? >> it is scary. it's a matter of just managing that fear. >> reporter: recent problems with those 35-year-old spacesuits have added to that fear. in july, an italian astronaut nearly drowned when water leaked into his helmet.

they did change out a pump fan assembly in mike hopkins' suit.t necessarily planned, but do the repair to the international space station. we are prepared for those spacewalks. there are general safety concerns. you want to make sure your tether is in place. you always want to check your buddy's safety tether. you want to be careful with your gloves. they will do glove checks to make sure there is no rips or tears or wear in the glove. they don't want a leak in the suit. the gloves take a lot of work and abuse. i don't want to say abuse, but they are used frequently in the spacewalks. you have an absorption pad in the back of the helmet. they want to make sure no water is in the suit. >> mike massimino, thank you for offering your perspective. the astronauts are an hour into a 6.5-hour mission. it seems like now, smooth sailing. >> mike, thanks. >>> the president closes out 2013 with a little rest and relaxation in hawaii. he left washington in his rear-view mirror, but that was after getting the last word. live coverage here on "new day saturday
