just outside is the lifeless body of deputy suzanne hopper. she's been shot in the head. >> it's just -- a crash of emotions. disbelief, anger, to some extent hatred. >> patrolman blum pulls through, but the loss of hopper, one of the squad's most beloved deputies is a crushing blow. >> this is the worst day in my 24 years as a sheriff of clark county. >> the gunman, michael ferryman, had a history of mental instability and violence. in 2001, he was involved in another shoot-out with officers in another ohio trailer park. no one was hurt and ferryman was found not guilty by reason of insanity. fast forward to 2011 and ferryman is living at another campground, monitored by the county but somehow gets ahold of a gun. >> we had no knowledge of that. and i'm still upset about that. >> hopper was a model officer and an active presence in the community. the outpouring of grief over her death is overwhelming. hundreds of squad cars from all over ohio join the procession to her funeral as local residents line the streets. >> the community came togethe

. >> reporter: katie hopper is miles' ex-girlfriend and mother to their daughter emily. left iraq but it never left him. >> he was very very aware of what he was doing, that he was ending people's lives even if it was for the greater good. >> reporter: it stayed with him? >> absolutely it did. >> reporter: medical records obtained by cnn state that years after miles returned from iraq in 2004 he quote, began to experience depression with suicidal attempts. he recalled seeing dead bodies and often had graphic violent dreams. friends and family saw miles struggle with his ptsd but say he was doing generally okay until january, when he disappeared. v.a. records show friends called the iowa v.a. to look for miles and told the v.a. they were filing a missing persons report with local law enforcement. miles finally responded, days later, to his friend harry ollor who had reached out via text. >> he wrote back i didn't mean to get people worried. i just need to spend some time at the hospital to figure things out. >> reporter: thankfully miles returned and chose to stay with ka

he went into these woods where he and hopper used to go and never came back.e toxic dose of sleeping pills, miles found frozen to death in this clearing wearing no jacket, no shoes and most infuriating, no clear reason why his life had to end like this. >> the v.a. failed him. i feel like they failed him. >> reporter: the v.a. tells cnn that the emergency room staff, quote, followed proper mental health screening procedures and that miles had given medication he indicated helped him in the past. they refused to answer any more of our questions citing federal privacy laws. the friends and family of richard miles want the virginia to learn from their tragedy. they want the v.a. to figure out what they could have done differently with miles so the next veteran is admitted and helped. >> what do you not have now that this happened? >> i dont't have a friend. my daughter doesn't have her father. people -- he has touched so many people. he was so great. >> reporter: the iowa v.a., however, seems more focused on defending itself than on learning from any mistakes. >>

brittney hopper of our los angeles station kcbs talked to a reporter who said there's even more to consider. >> reporter: as with dust i've always maintained since covering this case since back in 2000 that he was psychotic. >> reporter: matt bertbeck spoke to us via skype from new york. for years he's been covering robert durst, the real estate heir who was just charged with murdering an l.a. woman and was the subject of "the jink" linking him to others. berbeck says dust needs to be looked at in two other california disappearances karen mitchell and kristen modafferi who both went missing in 1997. >> durst had visited or seen mitchell at a homeless shelter that she had volunteered at. >> reporter: at the time mitchell was living in eureka and at the time durst would visit her store even dressing in drag. he was said to be at the store when she disappeared. and this is a sketch of a suspect. the other picture, dust. as for modafferi, her story was featured in "most wanted" in the 1990s. durst was living in the area. >> reporter: before these cases even came up before the public he had been
